We always stay in Essex House everytime we are in New York. We were never disappointed and this time, it's the same. Since it became JW Marriott, it's even better. Great location, great hotel.

I stayed at the Essex House a week before it changed over to the Marriott. With the flag change there has been no drop in quality or service. Location is still superb and the rate seemed lower than when the hotel was the Jumiyerah flag.

A race was taking place outside the hotel on the day we checked in causing all entrances to the hotel to be blocked off to vehicle trafic off for several blocks. We had to get out of a cab several blocks away and walk our suitcases to the hotel. The hotel had our email address and could have contacted us to tell us of the race circumstances. Room service […] attempted turn down service at 6:00 pm each night, which is prime time for guests getting ready for the evening. We asked if they would perform turndown service at 7:00 pm after we left the room, housekeeping continued to attempt turndown at 6 and not return to perform the service later in the evening. The back entrance to the hotel was locked after 12:00am without prior notice. Although the desk asked which newspaper we would like in the morning, no newspaper was delivered. The front desk simply said they ran out. The restaurant was not in operation for breakfast the last morning we were guests without prior notice. The front bar area was available for buffet only at $40 person. The hotel was performing some maintenance during breakfast causing the fire alarm to be set off while we were eating. Upon check out our clerk asked if we had a nice stay and we stated that we had a few concerns which she might want to address for future guests. The clerk just said "oh" and went on with our check out, she was obliviously did not want to know what the concerns were. Read more

Great hotel. Service could have been a little better for a 5 star hotel. I couldn't get them to clear the room service dishes for 24 hours even though I asked several times and they skipped the room turndown for some reason. Otherwise very nice.

The JW Essex House is in a perfect location just off Central Park. The staff was pleasant and helpful. The concierge failed a bit short when helping us find a restaurant that would appeal to both grown ups and young children. But overall it was a great stay and I would go back.

Our two night stay was fine but really nothing special. There are a number of equally good alternatives just a few blocks away. Our stay was rather odd. In hindsight we think the housekeeping staff had not been informed that our room was occupied on the first night. We needed to call the maintenance staff to our room three different times for items […] that would normally have been checked prior to occupancy of a room. #1 - the lights behind the bed were not working and there did not seem to be an obvious plug to correct the situation #2 the TV would not work - it took the maintenance person about 15 minutes to correct the problem including rebooting etc. #3 burned out bulb in lamp next to chair in sitting area which was unfortunately the only area for reading while family members slept. These items are each fairly trivial but when combined with the fact that the heat was set at 65 (took until midnight to warm up), we did not have towels or robes for four people, we never received turn down service it was not terribly impressive. On the other hand, our second night was delightful. By this time our room was warm and everything was working. We received the expected turn down service and filled ice bucket - all of the normal stuff. Night #1 - not very impressive Night #2 - as expected ......Average - SoSo Read more

I have stayed here in the past, and decided to stay here again for a getaway with my daughters and four year old granddaughter. We had three large, beautiful, modern rooms. One day I accidentally left the do not disturb sign on, so when I got back my room was not cleaned. No problem, they immediately sent someone to clean. The location is great, however, in February with a four year old nothing was that close when we did not want to venture out in the cold, Room service prices were ridiculous! A small pot of coffee was $17! one night she ordered chicken noodle soup and it was $25!! We ate an early breakfast in the hotel one morning and the prices were embarrassing, $12 for child order of pancakes!?? $37 for the buffet breakfast!? If we had been there in the summer, we would never have eaten in the hotel. However, if you are there with children the high food prices are a definite deterrent. The place was very clean, wonderfully located, elegant...probably perfect for most. Just a couple of quibbles. The gym was fine for cardio, but for weight resistance, it left something to be desired. Dumbbells only go up to 55. The pulldown lat machine was too low to provide full range of motion for my 5-10+ height and the chest press machine had the […] same problem. The other problem was this...they offer complimentary coffee starting at 7 a.m., but if you have coffee with your breakfast in the dining room, it leaps to $9. The waiter was very enthusiastic about replacing my complimentary cup with the $9 cup, and I resent that. However, keeping those defects in mind, it's great. If you like to row, they have a Concept 2 rower. I would go back, I would recommend it to anyone. Read more

Room was cleaned. One day they made our bed up twice. When we arrived it was late not greeted from taxicab and no offered to take bags up to room. The room was comfortable but they had sensors where if you got up to go the bathroom a light what light up towards the floor but the room is dark the light seems bright. We had a delightful time staying at this hotel. We stayed for three nights. It was recently taken over by Marriott which happen after making our reservation but was not a problem. Staff very professional and polite. We had an Expedia Elite upgrade eligibility which they granted. Beautiful view of central park. We would definitely stay again.

The rooom exceedingly small and had only one chair (desk). The room had only one very small closet with very few hangars. I paid for a king room, which I thought was an upgrade. My wife is diabetic and the room had no refrigerater in which to keep insulin-but of course there was a mini bar selling cold drinks. First trip to NY for my wife’s birthday. A call to Guest Services put me on hold twice and the second time the female did not return. The 2nd call was chaotic. A female in Guest Services expressed their inability to perform this service and commented that they may not do this type of service now that Marriott owned the hotel. After several exchanges […] from Concierge and Guest Services, Concierge-Michael hesitantly took responsibility for the request (birthday surprise of rose pedals, a nice Riesling and chocolate covered strawberries). On arrival at the room, nothing was prepared. Call to Guest Services that night was never followed up on. By mistake, an IT staff member came to our room. He promised to follow-up on our issue, no call back received. After several calls and two days, we did receive (with no note) a mini bottle of Champagne and a slice of cheesecake covered with fruit. Neither of which my wife could consume or enjoy. No consideration of the original request or any apology for a general and pervasive lack of follow-through. On our last day, we received a voice message from a manager asking generally how our stay was going... It is obvious from our experience that individual staff members are willing to serve but process and communication is failing when no message can be passed on without being lost. I would not recommend this hotel to others nor will we be staying there again. We can get the service we expect elsewhere. Read more
