Having stayed at the Essex House for years under multiple owners I wasn't concerned when I Iearned the hotel was now a Marriott. After a 3-nite stay however, the chain brought lite to the table and hotel has lost its personality. With thousands of marriott rewards none could be used for an upgrade. They couldn't even find my rewards number in their […] system. Being there during a snowstorm we had no housekeeping service for two days, which was understandable since staff couldn't get to the hotel. But you would have thought some token of compensation would be offered. A drink or cup of coffee in the restaurant. None was offered. The closet was no more than 12-18 wide with no room for all our clothes or winter coats. Never have I seen a smaller closet in a hotel room. Ever. We had clothes and boots and bags piled on the floor and only seating area. The bathroom was on the other hand unusually spacious. The lobby was devoid of any reading material. Although I am a diehard iPad carrier I love newspapers and magazines in a lobby. It felt highly generic with no personality. Even the Marriott sign looked out of place on the Art Deco marquis. Had read a few reviews of the Essex House prior to coming to New York and the comments were not all favorable for a JW Marriott brand. My wife and I are big JW Marriott fans and of course we had high expectations. I found the quality of the Hotel to be excellent. "My favorite hotel in New York City"
My wife and I lived in Manhattan for 25 years. We go back to the City to visit fairly frequently and we have stayed in the JW Marriott Essex House for our past two stays (one night in November and a week in August). In August we had a suite because we had our two kids with us; this trip was for our wedding anniversary so we had a regular room with queen […] bed. A smaller but very cozy room...everything we wanted. The Essex House has the GREATEST location, right on Central Park and close to Fifth Avenue and Sarabeth's, my favorite breakfast spot. Amazing getaway.. Our only complaint was that we called a month in advance to specifically request a room with a view of Central Park. Our room was not available with a king bed when we checked in. I was told we would have a rollaway but that did not exist! We settled for a room with 2 double beds. I booked a "deluxe" Central Park "view" and got a room with scaffolding in the middle of the "view" on a floor so low I could see some trees in the Park but not the Park itself. The receptionist was very efficient and we checked in smothly but the elevator hall had no security eventhough there was a sign to show the room key and anyone could take the elevator to all the floors. The handle for the faucet on the sink were in the front of the sink. Unusual and very much in your way when washing your hands and face. There were three different settings for the shower; hand held, from the top and faucet to fill the tub. However, the dial sign was missing on the hadle to choose which one to use so one had to get sprayed one way or other to get the water running. As for the room, there were holes on the wall where some fixtures were removed and few pieces of garbage were still left on the floor as well as on the dresser. When the room was cleaned the following day, mini bar was refilled but somehow a jar of nuts were left out and we were charged automatically. (We did get the charge taken out) Checking out was another unpleasant experience. Only one person was working, taking care of a group of people checking in. The room was huge in size. Double beds is standard in NY, but the size of the room is gigantic compared to other hotels, even the 5 stars! Nightly turn down service is nice; they leave chocolates and the kids loved it. Across the street from Central Park and walking distance to Times Square (Toys r us with giant ferris wheel and m&m world), Museum of […] Natural History, FAO, Broadway and other touristy spots. Staff was pretty good. Nothing like the southern hospitality I am used to, but okay. Some staff seemed annoyed to be bothered, but a lot of New York is like that. Hotel is getting some outside renovations but noticed no construction going on while we were there. Our 2 double bed room overlooked a "court yard" aka 3 brick walls, but ended up being perfect because we heard absolutely no noise; traffic or anything else from anyone. Only bad thing was that there are no ice machines so we they had to send it up each time after we called them for it and the fridge has sensors, so you cannot 'borrow' it to put your own water or whatever in it. This is a beautiful grand, huge old hotel overlooking Central Park. We stayed a week and could easily have stayed longer. While the rooms needed some things fixed, they were big, with more than enough room to swing a squirrel. Staff were friendly, although housekeeping were anxious to get in and clean room despite the DND sign (and a very fair daily […] tip). I am not a big fan of turn out (if you can't fold down your own bed sheets what business have you being in a hotel) but was grateful for ice at cocktail hour. The hotel is a good distance from the nightmarish Times Square so you can walk down and witness the damage corporatisation can wreak on a city without living it daily from your hotel. "High price to pay for horrible service"
A race was taking place outside the hotel on the day we checked in causing all entrances to the hotel to be blocked off to vehicle trafic off for several blocks. We had to get out of a cab several blocks away and walk our suitcases to the hotel. The hotel had our email address and could have contacted us to tell us of the race circumstances. Room service […] attempted turn down service at 6:00 pm each night, which is prime time for guests getting ready for the evening. We asked if they would perform turndown service at 7:00 pm after we left the room, housekeeping continued to attempt turndown at 6 and not return to perform the service later in the evening. The back entrance to the hotel was locked after 12:00am without prior notice. Although the desk asked which newspaper we would like in the morning, no newspaper was delivered. The front desk simply said they ran out. The restaurant was not in operation for breakfast the last morning we were guests without prior notice. The front bar area was available for buffet only at $40 person. The hotel was performing some maintenance during breakfast causing the fire alarm to be set off while we were eating. Upon check out our clerk asked if we had a nice stay and we stated that we had a few concerns which she might want to address for future guests. Much of the hotel is under construction downstairs, but the restaurant was still great for breakfast. The High Quality Evening Restaurant is gone, TOO BAD! It had one of the best wine list.
