Really nice hotel, especially for the price. Lobby is quite nice, rooms are comfy. Bathroom was a little small and lacked adequate lighting for applying makeup, but overall very nice. Service was excellent. Staff was terrific. Problem- Nob Hill!! That is one wicked hill.. not convenient to walk up. It's only three or four blocks to Union Square, but you have to take a taxi or cable car if you want to get back. Absolutely forget about it if you don't want to take your car with you everywhere. If you have a disability, you're stuck. It's a very difficult climb. Although that's not the hotel's fault, be aware that it is a major inconvenience. Also, surrounding neighborhood is residential- I couldn't find any simple stores (drug store, grocery store) nearby to get a few soda or snacks. I love the Mark Hopkins Hotel... just wish it was closer to Union Square or Embarcadaro or Pier 39...

The wife and I stayed at Mark Hopkins last weekend 1/2/10 and had a great time. The hotel is located on Nob Hill which is 2 blocks from Union Square. Great location near a number of great restaurants and shopping but far enough away from the noise. The room was perfect and the bed was very-very comfortable. The only thing I could say bad about the room was the water pressure in the shower was weak - but maybe the hotel is trying to conserve water :). Parking is expensive, which isn't apart of the room price - but parking is always expensive in SF. Other than that our stay was great - I would recommend to others. If you're planning on doing a lot of walking around the hotel, beware that the hotel is located on Nob Hill, therefore you'll have a steep walk up or down the hill to or from the hotel. It's not bad and definitely not enough to deter you from staying at this hotel.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Service, comfort, quality, decor and location were all exquisite, especially for the price of the room through hotels.com. We were a bit shocked with the price of parking, however, but realize we should have inquired earlier. Everyone was extremely helpful and accommodating. The room was gorgeous and had the most comfortable linens and pillows we've experienced! We enjoyed our stay immensely, and especially loved our Top of the Mark experience, dancing and taking in the view of San Francisco until the wee hours.

this is an old hotel, but the outside and lobby are very well maintained. the rooms are a bit dated and need new furnishings, but overall still nice. for the price i paid it was a great deal. very good location. my main issues were insanely high parking prices (over half what i paid for the room) and terrible water pressure in the bathroom. also, the hot water kept turning cold, then back to hot which made showering a bit unpleasant. overall a great hotel if you get a bargain price like i did. would definitely stay again if the rate was the same

Room was very small, as we closed the door the lock handle fell off the door. Then we went to get ice from the ice machine and it was broke, so my husband had to go searching on other floors for ice- kinda reminded me of a Motel 6, with broken things. On our way out I mentioned to the front desk about the ice machine and their answer was we could get ice on the other odd numbered floors ! Not a good answer to a customer, did they really think I wanted to go and down the elevator for ice while staying at the Mark Hopkins ?? Dinner was nothing to rave about either. First course- was a bean dip in a chinese spoon ? second course- was a shellfish broth- kinda stinky (husband does not eat shellfish), third couse-smoked duck salad (I had a pet duck, so I do not do duck)- fourth course- we choose beef medallions-they were only ok- nothing special, and fifth course- cheese cake (it is the only dessert I do not like, but my husband liked it) So it was disappointing to us.

The Mark Hopkins is near two cable car lines, so we could hop on and go down Powell to Union Square or head to Fishermans Wharf or Ghiardelli Square. The hotel sits at the top of Nob Hill, near Grace Cathedral and the Fairmont Hotel. It has a bar on its top floor (Top of the Mark) that poured good drinks while we gazed at the view. Our room on the 5th floor had a view, too, and the bed was so comfortable. We tipped the maid every day and received hand-written thank you notes. The concierge was helpful, as was the doorman. Everyone seemed eager to help, and we appreciated that. Our whole party of six enjoyed our stay at the Mark. Don't bring a car: it's $49 a day to park, plus valet tips!

Breakfast buffet at Top of the Mark was a bit disappointing (for $30), but the view more than made up for the quality of food (food wasn't bad, just not worth $30).

August 2009- stayed 4 nights with my family. Our two children had a great room with 2 queen beds, but it was on the 2nd floor overlooking the main entrance and hence noisy. We had a room on the 10th floor with one queen bed. This was quieter but was VERY small. Check what room they offer you before accepting! We only had breakfast in the hotel once (first morning) and, although very good, it was incredibly overpriced. The following days we walked a couple of blocks downhill (towards Union Sq) for a very nice 60's style 'Diner' (don’t stop at the first restaurant/cafe you come to, but go one more block. Eat as much as you like for breakfast as you will certainly burn off the calories on the very steep walk uphill back to the hotel. The Cable Car passes right outside the hotel (another noise for the second floor room!). Parking at the hotel was expensive at $59 per 24hr. I kicked myself for hiring a car from the airport as it just sat in the hotel car park for 3 days (i.e. cost of car rental plus cost of parking = a BIG waste of money – I will remember for next time!!). We always walked from the hotel to wherever we wanted to go (China Town or even Fishermans Wharf does not take long) but then took a cab back to the hotel (the hills really ARE steep!). The cab price from Fishermans Wharf to the hotel was $8-10
