This was a one night stay for business purposes. The location of the hotel is ideal but the room I had was small and in need of redecoration. The mattress on the bed was wafer thin. The lights in the bathroom were very dim, I could only just make out my reflection when shaving. Just as well it was on expenses, I'd be even more unhappy if it had been my own money.

The hotel is next to the National Gallery and a short walk to Leicester Square and many theatres. There was no Non-smoking rooms available, although the staff checked over the room and opened windows etc. The room decoration was very dated and not in a good condition for a four star hotel although it had all the basics. It could be a lot better if there was investment although I may have been allocated a worse room as a solo traveller. Single people NB! Staff were helpful. Some great bits of London are within a very short walk.

We arrived at the Thistle just after 3pm (we were told we could check in anytime after 2pm) on the Sat and went to check in, only to be told our room was not ready and we would have to wait. No time was specfied. We were meeting some friends at 4.30pm and so we were eager to get into our room, shower, change and get going. We did keep asking when the room would be ready and keep being told 10 mins, or just waiting to here from house keeping....we explained we were meeting friends and could they please get us a room! After standing at the desk for almost an hour we got our room. We had no time to shower, just got changed and went out! On the plus side the room was very good, good size, lovely batheroom, air con and the location was excellent! On the Mon evening we had tickets for Les Mis, we'd been out all day and returned to our hotel about 6 to get shower/changed. When we got to our room our key card did not work! We then went down to reception to sort this out only to be met by a huge cue of business people who were checking in, we waiting over half an hour in this que to reactivate our key card - which shouldn't have been deactivated in the first place!!

The location is outstanding if you want to be in the middle of things, next to the National Gallery, Leicester Sq, St. Martin's in the Fields (concerts and great Cafe in the Crypt) Short walk to Picadilly. The rooms were large by British and European standards and very comfortable. The bathtub (a previous review mentioned the super high tubs) were not as high as many British hotels I've stayed in in the past and they were well equipped with grab bars. The staff was wonderful, very accommodating and knew my name even when ordering a drink at the lobby bar from day 1. It didn't feel like a 3.5 star experience. It was above expectations and I felt very comfortable traveling alone. I highly recommend it!

The hotel had scaffolding round it on arrival, but not a major issue. We arrived 2 hours early and got upgraded to a junior suite! The room was very spacious, with a BIG comfortable bed, large flat screen tv, seperate changing/ironing/wardrobe area and nice toilet. One thing we noticed was how fresh the room smelt on every return. For a 'smack bang in the middle of everything' hotel, this is your place! The rooms are a bit small and the walls seem a little thin (I could hear the TV and man speaking next door in the early evening- thank heavens he went to bed) but if you're in Trafalgar Square on holiday you shouldn't be spending too much time in the hotel anyway. Hotel environment was clean and tidy and the staff was nice. It's located around the corner from the Gallery and a few blocks away from both Leicester Square (West End) and Picadilly Circus. Big Ben/Parliament/Westminster Abbey are a 10-15 min walk down Whitehall Street. One afternoon it rained a little and I was surprised that they didn't have "loaner" umbrellas. Instead, they give you one and put a 40 pound charge on your room, which is taken off when you return the umbrella. Granted, it was nice and sturdy, but I wouldn't pay that much ANYWHERE for an umbrella... We didn't order any room service so I can't comment on the food but the hotel has two restaurants and the menus are posted just about everywhere (in elevators, hallways, etc.) Wireless Internet is 6 pounds for an hour or 10 pounds for 24. To my knowledge there was no ethernet connection available in the rooms. It was a pleasant (albeit a little pricy) stay in London and if I got a better deal on the rooms I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

We chose the Royal Trafalgar for its location and early check in (2pm). We had been on a long flight and wanted our room sooner. Unfortunately, ours and a few others were not ready! At 2.30, we were upgraded to a complimentary executive suite. I still would have preferred the room to have been ready on time. However, the reception area was nice, the guy on the desk tried his best and we got a nice clean room in the end. I would hate to see what the standard room was like because the executive room was rather thin. It looked a bit worn around the edges but it did the job I suppose. The only negative was the noise level from the corridor. The insulation was poor and you could hear every conversation from outside if there was one. All in all, for price and location it was good enough. They allowed us to leave our luggage with them until our train the next day which is always a good thing.

When reported to reception someone came to room without a replacement wanting to come into room. Not entirely appropriate as husband in underwear and myself still in bed!!! After looking at kettle said "It's not working, I will get a replacement" Obviously our say so that kettle not working meant nothing!! We were told upgrade included robes, there were none in room. This two day stay was for our wedding anniversary. When we departed we were not asked how our stay was, very poor customer relations. We would not recommend the hotel at it's present star rating.

You can't beat the location. The National Gallery and Trafalgar Square are right behind you and Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square are nearby. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. During my stay I dealt with several different desk clerks and concierges and I found all of them to be helpful and efficient. The room I was in was tiny by US standards, but if you're on vacation and plan on spending most of your day sight-seeing and eating out this shouldn't be an issue. Even though I was on the fifth floor, I could sometimes hear late night revelers from nearby Leicester Square. One area that needs improvement are the bathrooms. The tub had kind of a weird smell to it and you practically needed a stepladder to get into the bathtub. This could be a problem for elderly tourists or anyone with mobility problems. Overall, I enjoyed my stay at the Royal Trafalgar. It was clean, comfortable and was right next to all the action.

The lobby, bar and restaurant are very attractive. The breakfast (15 GBP) was pricey and not included in the room; the traditional English breakfast (eggs, sausages, etc) was the same price as the cold Continental buffet. The one time I requested a wake-up call, it was delivered in person 45 minutes after I requested. I am 6'2" and did not easily fit in the twin bed in the room (which had head and foot boards). The room was small, clean, had tea service, flat screen TV, iron. The room was quiet and sunny. There was no AC and it was summer and muggy. This was more a 3 star than a 4 star accommodation. I would stay at the Royal Trafalgar again as a budget accommodation near the National Gallery and Leicester Square.
