"A delightful step back in time"
A pleasure to walk in thru the grandeur of a hotel from a bygone age and a pleasure to step out of this delightful hotel and into the heart of the city. The reception, lobby, bar and cage elevator are impressive and more than make up for some of the short falls in the accommodation of which there are several. I have stayed in two rooms and the newly renovated (in the original style) rooms are very well done with air conditioning that can keep pace with the summer heat and everything as you would expect. The older rooms are not unpleasant but are showing signs of wear and maintenance is not as you would expect from a five star hotel, with attention needed to the light fixtures and plumbing. However I would stay again and would certainly request a recently renovated room.

Only a few blocks from the city center, an easy 5 minute walk. The hotel was amazing, like walking back in time. Employees spoke English and able to recommend tours and line them up from there, saving a trip to the tour concession stand.

"No air conditioning."
The room I stayed in had no air conditioning despite their website stating all rooms were air conditioned. The windows were also broken, resulting in a very hot night that made it hard to sleep. Also the doorways were short and I hit my head on them several times. The Internet was consistent, but slow.

"Very good location, decent hotel."
I must have received one of the rooms that had not yet received the upgrades displayed on the photos throughout the lobby. The room was comfortable, and most importantly the bed was newer and had clean linens but the cover spread looked to be a few years old. The carpet was well-worn and the walls showed considerable wear and tear. The bathroom was efficient, but lacked the evidence of a thorough construction job. The sink appeared suspended from the wall with the pedestal supposedly holding up up short by a couple inches with exposed piping and the stickers from the hardware store still attached. The staff were very helpful and friendly, though, and the hotel had a great central location making an exploration of Brussels by foot quite easy. That all being said, it was a strong budget choice.

"Grand Old Lady"
This place is a grand old hotel. It has exceptionally beautiful public areas. Our room, however, could have used a little sprucing up. There were two sinks, but only one had a working drain plug. The drain plug on the tub didn't work quite right either, but we got around it. Again on the plus side, the location is superb. Right next to a subway stop and just a short walk to the Grand Plaza. We spent most of a day exploring the neighborhood, and came back with all the Belgian lace and chocolate we could carry. The staff was also wonderful and quite responsive to questions and requests. I certainly recommend this hotel.

"Nice and elegant hotel at the center of Brussels"
Metropole Hotel has been a true institution in Brussels for many years. As a guest, I was looking precisely for that established character that I have seen in films or read about in books: a true encounter was a glamour of the past. The hotel is still there and, in general terms, the service is good and the staff is proper and courteous, but one is able to notice also certain signs of decay or decline, which is a pity. The quality of food is excellent, though the Room Service, in my case, made several mistakes with my breakfast orders. I sent two shirts to the laundry and the result was mediocre (specially with a linen shirt) for a charge of 9€ each plus service. The mattresses could and should be better. Notwithstanding, my experience was good and, certainly, I would recommend this hotel that I got for an affordable price.

"An Oldie, but Barely a Goodie"
This is an old hotel which has undergone a face lift. My room was average in size. The TV below average in size. The bathroom a real challenge for those of us trying to get into the tub who are not high-jumpers. The tub has a shower head, on flexible hose, which must be used carefully lest water stream pass the tiny partition and onto the floor. The elevator is the most interesting and entertaining item I found in the place. It is a wonderful relic. Completely see-through with a door you open yourself and a cage you slide out of your way. The only disappointment was the presence of modern buttons to select your floor. Gone is the diabolical operator with the handle to make the car rise like a bat-out-of-hell, then stop on a dime at your floor so you can experience that wonderful "belly tickler" sensation just before you vomit. Gone too is his 'friendly' warning about the large of gap between the car and the floor that used to scare the hell out of me when I was a kid (yes -- I am that old), "Don't fall through the crack". I am afraid this hotel did fall through the crack.

"Historic Beauty surrounded by run down 'hood."
Beautiful historic hotel is surrounded by a run down neighborhood and a wealth of pornography shops. It is so sad. If I were the management, I would work with the neighborhood revitalization department and move different/better businesses into the area. Once inside, the hotel is gorgeous and the staff is lovely! I stayed in the "newer" Art Deco wing and love the furnishings. The description does oversell the "free mini bar", better to describe it as "complimentary water and soda". Breakfast is too expensive. Walk over to Charli Boulangerie instead.

"Step back in time at the Hotel Metropole"
Staying at the Hotel Metropole is like stepping back in time when glamorous travel was the norm. Unfortunately, the hotel was going through what looked like a pretty extensive renovation near the lobby area which put a bit of a damper on the hotel's grandeur. The staff is excellent and the room was larger than the usual European hotel. It had a bright, sunny, just a bit shabby chic feel but lovely nevertheless. The location can't be beat. Close to a public parking garage and very close to the Grand Place. Would have given an overall 5 points, but the ongoing renovation and the view from our room overlooked what looked like rooftop ductwork and apartment buildings. But since we were there for one overnight, this really didn't matter (but didn't feel it should rate the 5 stars). We opted not to have the steep 28 Euro breakfast. Yes it's a buffet (we were able to get a package deal a year or so ago where it was included with the room so we knew what they served). We'd rather spend 56 Euro towards a great dinner and grabbed a waffle from a street vendor for 4 Euros for the both of us instead. You owe it to yourself to stay here at least once. These old, grand hotels are fading fast, but the Metropole I think is here to stay. Maybe we'll check it out again once the renovations are done.

"STAY AWAY"
We arrived to a beautiful lobby to check in, long line but only two check in clerks available. After an hour wait finally got to the room- and my jaw dropped. It was shabby, with. Scraped walls, furniture, and dirty smelly carpet. The room smelled awful and was unusually hot. We turned on the AC and left for a walk. When we came back a few hours later, it was a sauna in the room. The AC was broken and only heat came out. After a few calls and 45 min wait an electrician came out to confirm that AC was broken and they were booked up for the night. We had no choice. Mind you - this is supposedly a 5 star hotel.

"Beautiful Hotel but Needs Updating"
The hotel was beautiful. The room we had needed updating badly. The carpet had stains and was old. There were no plug in outlets in the bathroom or near a mirror for me to use my curling iron and straightener. I don't know about anyone else, but this is a big deal when I can't do my hair. The wood work needed painting it was chipping off all the trim work and balcony door (which is in inaccessible). Wallpaper was peeling off in certain areas. However, after saying all of this,I still liked the hotel and staff. Our room was hugh. I believe I read that they would be updating the hotel rooms so maybe the things I mentioned will be fixed. I would definitely recommend this hotel if updated.

"Stinky hotel with outdated rooms"
The room smelled of sewer gas. There was mold present in multiple areas of the bathroom. The hotel as a whole was smelly too, with overpowering fragrance likely tying to cover up years of smoke. Beautiful lobby and bars, and large pictures of beautiful deluxe rooms. Then you get to your room and it hasn't been updated since 1975. You know those large wall mounted hair dryers, circa 1975? That is what you get at the Hotel Metropole. Staff at check in desk more often then not ignored us, playing with papers etc unless we actively disturbed them. Good water pressure in the shower though.

"Past Prime but Good Value"
This hotel while steeped in history is well past it's prime. The lobby, restaurant and bar are very impressive. The staff was very professional, but the rooms are tired and haven't been very well maintained. The upside is that the room was very large for Europe and had a king size bed. "Not up to its rankings, sadly."
Well, I was hoping for a nicer hotel considering it's rated 5-star. I found it tired, a bit the worse for wear. One day the elevator didn't work, and with a neurological condition similar to MS, the suggestion of several flights of stairs or going to an elevator half way down the block seemed carelessly tossed out. The location is good. Easy access to metro just out front. But in all, I'd have to say that a 5-stay should provide a bit more, not have a view of a nasty inner roof with construction going on next door. . . or at the least a warning would have been appreciated so I could book somewhere else. Sigh.

"Make this your hotel in Brussels"
We wanted to be near the Grand Market so that we could walk to key sites in Brussels. We wanted free wifi and breakfast too. Breakfast was exceptional and was served in a lovely dining room with an Indian theme that even had beautiful stuffed peacocks as part of the decor. Wifi was fast which is always a plus. Before our visit we asked the concierge for assistance with locating an English speaking guide and he came through with a wonderful guide. The room was large, clean and tastefully decorated. The hotel is a beautiful old grand hotel with gracious and helpful staff. We had a very pleasant stay

Great location for walking to historic sites and train station and metro. Arrived before check in time from an international flight and they kept our bags secure while we walked around the area. They let us into our room before check in time when the room was ready. "Not such a pleasant experience"
Not at all good, nor what expected. Very surprised at the reviews I read and the experience I had. Moved room - after finding mould in shower alcove and around ventilation ducts and paint peeling off everywhere and shattered wood around manhole in bathroom ceiling in my first room. Then got upgraded and duly charged for a room which also had mould growing around the shower/bath alcove and the ventilation ducts. Paint flaking and peeling off everywhere. Not a good feeling at all waking up in this hotel in such rooms. Service was okay, but not great. Staff apologised but failed to do anything. Really not up to scratch.

"Nice hotel, but definitely not a 5-star hotel."
The hotel was nice, but definitely not a 5-star hotel. Many basic amenities were not provided (e.g. no hair conditioner, very basic toiletries) many of the amenities listed on their website were missing (no robes, slippers...etc.). The first room we were in had a broken bathroom door, broken shower, and no safe. We were moved to another room, which was better, but still seemed like a 3-star hotel. The bathroom door closed, but the knob was very loose. It was extremely loud, the walls are not sound proof. They didn't replenish the mini-bar every day nor did they replenish some of the bathroom toiletries. The hotel staff however was fantastic, extremely helpful and polite, so definitely 5-star service. The lobby is beautiful and there appears to be very beautiful rooms from the pictures in the hallway, but definitely not the average room.

"Great location, old school charm"
The hotel had a fantastic location, walking distance from most attractions and nightlife in Brussels. It had an old school charm, especially the public areas. The room itself was fine but seemed like it had seen better days. Heated towels were nice but the shower was extremely hard to operate. The bed was comfortable. "I will never again never stayed at Hotel Metropole"
I had booked 2 rooms in the Hotel Metropole in Brussels, Belgium, but had made a mistake in the dates. Instead of Sunday to Monday night, I had entered the dates for Saturday and Sunday. Not smart, admitted, but human beings make errors. And admittedly, I did make a non-refundable, non-changeable reservation. I tried to call the hotel twice to change the reservation, and so did Expedia. However, the hotel did want to change, the reservation, and in this way showed a complete lack of customer orientation and service. If a hotel shows such a lack of customer orientation in the reservation department, it often means that in other departments they also lack in customer orientation and are not interested in customer satisfaction. I lost $250, the hotel lost a customer, because I will never book a room in that hotel again, and maybe it is a warning to other customers.

"A classic!"
After spending six days in tiny rooms in London and Paris, I have to say my room at the Metropole was at least double the size. The bed was very comfortable, the TV worked better, the bathroom was large, the lobby fairly spectacular, and the minibar had freebies. The hotel itself was probably the essence of elegance in the 1960s, but it's looking quite dated now. Honestly though, I'd trade comfort for coolness any day! The restaurant is excellent too.

"Avoid at all costs"
This hotel was absolutely awful. In the pictures, it's a charming Art Deco establishment. In reality, it's an old, broken-down place a la National Lampoon's European Vacation. The room was dingy and slightly dirty, the bed was sagging on one side and the last straw was that the carpet stretching from the (old) radiator to the bed was soaked. At that point (after less than an hour in the hotel) we checked out, dragging our suitcases down three flights of stairs because the elevator was out of service. The Metropole refused to refund our money for the three-day stay, but the experience was truly bad enough to warrant paying for another hotel.

"Great Hotel. Can't imagine staying anyplace else!"
There are very few hotels this nice with a better location! Great buffet breakfast for families on the go or anyone. This hotel is located very close to the Grand Place (pronounced Plass), which is loaded with shopping, entertainment, and restaurants. One of the most fun places you will find anywhere. The metro entrance is literally almost right out the front door. The city bus system is superb. Movie theaters right across the street! This hotel is the oldest in Brussels. The hotel is a little "tired", but after you stay here, it won't matter. After you stay here you will know what I mean. This is a wonderful hotel and I can't really imagine staying anyplace else after seeing the other local hotels. We are from the U.S. and we have never had a better vacation.
