My husband booked us a room at the Mar Monte as a storm front caused us to look for lodging as we headed South from Monterey to Los Angeles. It was Monday afternoon and with rain pending, the other guests were primarily business minded, but the staff welcomed my seven year old daughter and myself and made us feel at home for our short stay. The cozy fire at reception and helpful and informative front desk staff and bellman were are very helpful and pleasant. We both loved the decor of the hotel which is old California, lots of tile and adobe and dark wood, and feels like vacation, not bland and conformist. Our room was very comfortable with a good mattress, coffee maker, mini fridge, microwave, and robe. The Mar Monte has the facilities for both business and pleasure with a spa area for massage and a business center. While my daughter enjoyed the pool, I enjoyed the hot tub, both before dinner and the next morning too which was great excercise after the long drive. Stopping at the Mar Monte for the night was a great idea, and we arrived in Los Angeles refreshed and relaxed.

Our tub had a slow drain...showering for more than 30 seconds meant you were standing in several inches of water. We called management and asked for assistance, they said they would send someone and no one ever showed up. The hotel is on the water, but is far from local restaurants/shopping (nothing in walking distance). There are cheaper hotels just down the street if you insist on staying in this area.

The hotel itself was in a great location; however was NOT worth the money. The rooms were expensive, but the hotel was not all that impressive. Decently clean, somewhat comfortable -- but certainly not what I expected given what I had paid. The DoubleTree Fess Parker is next door and is MUCH nicer and nearly the same price!!!

I got to my hotel around 5pm to check-in. Upon getting to my hotel room across the street from the "main" part of the hotel I find that I was put into the room with the elevator shaft behind the headboard wall. I politely call the front desk to ask if their is a room I can relocate to given the noise is so loud I will not be able to get sleep - I am not a sound sleeper; however the loud noise can be heard down the hall. They tell me they are nearly sold out and since I "only booked the king" room I was limited. Given I was traveling on business I was limited to my spending; thus "only a king room". Now I am in room two, thankful they did have one other option at the other end of the hall. Once in this room I found several unacceptable issues in the bathroom: 1. pubic hairs on the toliet seat of a "clean" room 2. black mold on the rubber shower mat 3. the tub drain did not drain while showering and other issues that I will not repeat. Exhausted I decided to call it a day and let the front desk know first thing the following morning in person before leaving for the day. After a full day of work, getting back to the room around 5pm - the bed had been made (thus housekeeping had been in the room) but none of the formentioned issues were address. I again went across the street to talk to the front desk stressing my disappointment. This associate apologized and was helpful, within 30 min. of my second complaint things started to get fixed. I work in hospitality and understand things get missed but it took 3 attempts to get things simply cleaned. I hope your experience is better than the one I had. Good Luck.

Was disappointed when I saw how old the hotel was...but, after staying 3 days and after hearing how much others were paying at hotels nearby, I decided that as long as my place was clean, comfortable and convenient, I was just fine! The bed was comfortable & the bathroom was small, but that is preferable to the bathroom being large and the bed being uncomfortable!

This was actually my second choice hotel for my trip to SBA. But wow, am I glad I trusted my instincts and went with this hotel. I was travelling with my 2 teenagers, and we travel a lot. Teens are hard to please, but I must say even they were happy. The staff were very professional and friendly. The room was large, clean, and very appealing. The restaurant was very reasonably priced and the food quality excellent. My son is coming to UCSB in the Fall, and we came down to check out the area, etc. My extended family and I will certainly stay at this hotel in the future. There is a Resort also in the area, this hotel definitely rivals them in price, comfort, and luxury.

We booked this hotel due to the value for the price, the heated pool and the great location. When we checked in I was floored to discover the pool was closed for renovation. There had been no notification on their website. We were offered the use of a neighboring hotel with a heated pool, which was nice, but the long walk in the cold wind with a 5 year old was not the most pleasant thing! However, I did follow the lead of other reviewers and requested an upgrade. One was not available on our first night, but on our second night, WOW! Due to my complaints about the pool and the request of the upgrade we were given a gorgeous room with 2 queen beds overlooking the ocean with a balcony. The room was beautiful and huge, the beds and bedding soooo comfortable. We took the local shuttle to the wharf, and walked to the zoo so I never even had to move my car. Also, the in-room microwave and fridge helped cut down on meal expenses. I will definitely be staying here again and recommending it to everyone.

It was loud, with the noise of every car and truck that drove past the hotel all night long, which were many. We were also given a room right next to the elevator, never nice.
