Lima area Hotels

From the traditional and intricate yellow buildings to the shimmering skyscrapers, Lima has many contrasts within its city limits. Perched on the sparkling South Pacific coast, it's a great place to enjoy the sunshine, and at night certain areas are full of neon drenched bars and clubs that open until dawn. Like any capital city it's also the center of government and finance, and many major corporations have moved to the modern areas such as San Isidro which has experienced something of a property boom.

Things to see

The Miraflores Central Park provides an oasis of calm amongst the busy streets of Lima. You'll find well-maintained parkland, with large areas of grass and swaying palm trees providing plenty of shade from the hot sun. Close to the city center you'll also find the long shores of Waikiki Beach which has a mixture of sandy areas and smooth grey pebbles, with shallow blue waters where you can cool off. The Museo Nacional Arqueologia is noticeable from its bright yellow exterior, and inside Peru's oldest museum you'll find lots of examples of classic art, colorful ceramics, and intricate textiles. For the more macabre minded there are also several skulls on display from various periods of history, and you can learn about the funeral traditions and death rituals associated with Peru. History enthusiasts should also visit the Government Palace with its breathtaking Baroque Revival architecture. Dating back to the 16th century, this grand palace is the home of the ruling president, and if you're lucky enough to get a ticket for one of the special tours, you can get behind the tall iron gates to see the pillars and painted ceilings of the building.

It's a busy transport hub, with long, wide freeways intersecting the area, and busy roads that are prone to traffic jams. Barranco is a more traditional area, with lots of Art Deco style buildings from when this was a resort for the rich and famous. It's since become known as a hip, artistic district, and is famous for the wide range of traditional restaurants with cozy surroundings and bright, zesty Peruvian cuisine.

How to get to Lima area

Jorge Chávez International Airport is the main airport of Lima, and flights arrive here regularly from across the USA, Mexico, and major cities of South America. It's a 20 minute drive or taxi ride to the center of Lima, and you can ensure you get a licensed cab by visiting one of the desks at the arrivals terminal. There are local buses that depart from the airport, but these can get very crowded and are only suitable for those who are traveling light. Lima also has a station on the Ferrocarril Central del Perú, also known as the Central Railway, and from here you can visit various cities in Peru.
