I have traveled to KK several times--sometimes on my way to other places, but regardless of the destination, an overnight stay in KK is always warranted. KK has a beautiful waterfront and is a great place to recover when traveling on a long trip to another destination. Cititel Express has a great location in walking distance to the Waterfront and City Center, shopping, money changers, restaurants, and any other services you need from the downtown area of KK. The rooms are clean but can be quite small. However, I have stayed in many other hotels in KK, and the quality has really varied from crappy and average to decent to good. Even though they charge a nominal fee for Internet usage, I was very happy with the quality and strength of signal that allowed me to conduct all my business on my computer. This was a welcome contrast to my previous KK hotel which had comfortable rooms but a weak wifi internet signal. I will be returning to Cititel on my next stay in Kota Kinabalu. It has the perfect mix of quality and value that businessmen seek when looking for a good mid-range hotel in terms of star value.

The hotel is only 10 minutes by cab from the airport, Sunday markets, beach, etc. Check-in was quick, easy, and organized. My room was simple but clean and comfortable. I had one issue with hot water but maintenance was there in 5 min and the problem solved in 15 min. Hotel staff's English can be limited, but it wasn't an issue. Breakfast buffet has sizeable, but is not much for the typical "western" fare. On site karaoke bar was fun, elevated hotel location minimized traffic noise from nearby road. Overall this is a top bargain for what you get and I will book there again.
