It also has a myriad of activities on offer for those who prefer an action packed vacation, and you can snorkel between the colorful corals, fish, or take in the views by paragliding above the waters. Gran Coral Golf is a modern and stylish course close to the beaches, and golfers can enjoy being surrounded by palm trees and wild flowers as they zip around the vast course on their golf carts. The Xaman Ha Aviary is a must for wildlife lovers, with dozens of species of exotic birds on display. Amongst the lush and shady trees you'll see plenty of brightly colored feathers being ruffled as these birds enjoy their comfortable habitats.

Where to stay

Playa del Carmen is a charming Mexican town with lots of traditional architecture and colorful stands lining the streets. In the center you'll find upmarket pedestrianized shopping streets full of boutique stores, as well as busier areas full of souvenir stalls and tempting food carts selling spicy snacks. At night the bars open and there's a friendly, sociable atmosphere, although the town is relatively quiet compared to many Mexican resorts. The Maroma area to the north hosts some of the most exclusive and upmarket hotels, and there are plenty of quiet, private beaches that offer visitors a taste of paradise.

How to get to Playa del Carmen

Cancún International Airport is about 45 minutes from Playa del Carmen and welcomes flights from major hubs across the USA and Mexico. If you decide to take a taxi then make sure it's an authorized and registered cab, as there will be plenty of unlicensed cars trying their luck around the arrivals lounge. There's also a direct bus from the airport to the heart of Playa del Carmen, and several shuttle services which can be booked in advance. Playa Del Carmen Airport is closer to the resort, but only offers domestic flights within Mexico, although you'll often see small private jets landing here too.
