Akumal Hotels

Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula has long drawn crowds of sun-worshippers, thanks to its miles of immaculate coastline overlooking the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. It can be hard to choose one destination, but Akumal certainly stands out as a gleaming gem on the seafront. Just south of Playa del Carmen, and part of the celebrated Riviera Maya area, it's a picture-perfect location, complete with swaying palm trees lining the coast and perfect, powdery white sands you'll want to while away the days on.

Things to see

Ever wanted to go snorkeling among the turtles of Mexico? Or perhaps you're feeling more adventurous and want to go even deeper into the ocean depths in your scuba gear? It's all on offer in Akumal, with a series of spectacular beaches to explore. Whether you favor Akumal's main beach, or spots like Xpu-Ha Beach and Yal-Ku Lagoon, you can also be more languid and just relax on the white sands with an ice-cold drink and a good book. With that sun blazing down and the palms hanging overhead, you'll feel like you're in paradise. As if that wasn't enough, you can also go further along the shoreline to Xel-Ha, where you can smugly cross "swim with dolphins" off your bucket list. This vast natural aquarium is also where you can snorkel amid darting schools of tropical fish, including rare and protected species, and also show off to friends and family at the infamous Stone of Courage. Leap off this rocky outcrop into the crystal-like turquoise waters below, and then dare to traverse a river by hanging onto ropes. Now that'll be a holiday snap to be proud of.

Hotels in Akumal

If you're tired of samey, white-and-beige colored guestrooms, you'll be delighted by some of the hotels in Akumal. The Mexican spirit can be seen in the very decor, with many guestrooms decked out in lively blues, red, and yellows, reminding you every morning of exactly where you are. As well as being vibrantly decorated, many of the hotels also feature the resort amenities you'd expect, such as languid swimming pools, lively bars, and soothing saunas and steam rooms. WiFi access can be expected, not to mention air conditioning and ceiling fans to keep you cool when you get back from the blazing beach.

Where to stay

You can certainly choose to stay in one of the hotels in Akumal itself – there's quite a few, as you might expect from a sought-after tourist destination, so it's just a matter of comparing and contrasting online. As an aside, you might also be tempted by some of the hotels just a little along the coastline in Tulum. This is a perfect site for history lovers and culture seekers, as some of the best-preserved Mayan ruins in the region are here, looming grandly on the cliffs overlooking the ocean.

How to get to Akumal

Flying into the region, the closest gateway to Akumal is Cancun International Airport. This is located just an hour or so from Akumal by car. Speaking of which, while many hotels operate buses to pick you up and drop you off, you'll probably want to look into hiring a car while you're here. Particularly if you want to explore the region as well as sunbathe. On the other hand, if you intend to only travel a little here and there, you can make use of taxis or the very cost-effective colectivos. These are vans that operate along the coast and can whisk you from beach to beach. They can be cramped and noisy, but that's all part of the experience.
