This no frills hotel was in a great location - about 3 minute walk to trains - and about a 20 minute walk to the center of Shinjuku. There are many restaurants in the neighborhood and if you don't want to eat out there are many small shops selling food to take away. We were traveling on a budget and this hotel was great for our one night in stay. The rooms were clean, larger than expected. The bathroom was little more than a closet with a short tub and shower, but did the trick non the less. If you are looking for luxury and comfort, this is not the place for you. But if you are in need of a place to sleep and shower there is nothing wrong with the Empire.

"practical, safe, budget-friendly"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 6, 2013
I only stayed one night when I was going between the airport and another city. It was convenient and within very close walking distance to Ueno station. I felt totally safe and slept like a baby. Quiet, soundproof, and great blackout window covering (a part of the wall that slides over the entire window). Small en suite bathroom but it suited me perfectly!
"Good value, but probably not for newbies to Japan"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 1, 2013
I enjoyed my stay at the Kurumi Mansion and, as others have written, the manager (owner?) is a very nice guy. I would, however, caution that it is not particularly close to any subway stations (in spite of how it may look on a map) and the surrounding neighborhood is mostly residential, which is fine, but a bit dull (though not without scenic interest). I lived in Japan for three years and have reasonable Japanese language skills, but I still managed to screw up my late night train connection on one occasion (but had a typically competent & honest Japanese taxi driver bring me back to the Kurumi for a reasonable fare). Overall, the Kurumi Mansion is definitely a good deal by Tokyo standards, but if you've never been to Japan and don't know any Japanese it might be better for you to spend more money and be closer to the sights in Tokyo you want to see, or at least nearer to the train that takes you there. But, it is very reasonably priced and the manager is a fine gentleman.
