"Revamped rooms are smaller but very nice/modern"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 2, 2012
Great location, Great hotel. Saw a lot of complaints about the new rooms. Have stayed here 10+ times and think it is top shelf. Would much prefer a clean, modern, wood floor room over a big old carpeted room like you get so often in HK.

"Great hotel in out of way location"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 1, 2012
The Island Pacific Hotel has become my first choice for Hong Kong because it is a very nice hotel at a price that's lower than comparable hotels. The reason for the lower price is likely that it is in a somewhat out of the way location - well beyond the last MTR (subway) stop, and in an area that doesn't have any restaurants of shops that would appeal to the typical tourist. However, the tram stops close-by and I think it's fun to take it, like a local, into the Central area from where I can get anywhere I want to go easily. And the hotel staff is great.

When I made the booking I knew this was a convenient location for the things our family wanted to do in Hong Kong. I only found out it was the former Xinua News Building. I began to anticipate rabbit warren sized rooms. We were happy to see that the rooms were simply, but nicely decorated. We had two queen size beds; they were firm and comfortable. The bathroom was a bit plain and there was a problem with the shower curtain/bath tub design as the water went everywhere - easily solved by laying out the towels before showering. Breakfast was included, but was nothing special - the dim sum was terrible. Regular restaurant service (lunch and dinner) was a much higher standard and has a good reputation amongst people living in Hong Kong. Wifi is an extra charge in the rooms but free in the lobby and hotel restaurant so the guests are all busy on their electronic devices. The hotel staff were alert to guest reqirements without being overly solicitous. This hotel doesn't have the bells and whistles of 5 star hotels in Hong Kong but was very comfortable for the week we spent in Hong Kong. Convenient shuttles, too!
"1st time HK trip, success!"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Apr 27, 2012
Our stay here at L Hotel Island South was great. Not to say we spent a whole lot of time actually in the hotel, but the time we did was comfortable, relaxing and the staff was extremely accommodating. One staff member in particular, I believe her name was Clara, went way above her duties to help us with our commute around the city. She gave us maps, directions, helped us change our money, and even gave personal suggestions of particular places we would do well to go visit. The Hotel is a bit out of the way of the main city and most attractions [except Ocean Park, which we could actually see from outside our room window] but their timely and reliable shuttle service will drop you to the nearby MTR station and pick you up from the airport express and take you back to the hotel. We rode a taxi only once during our 3 day trip because we woke up late the morning of our departure and missed the shuttle. All in all, a great 1st trip to HK and a great hotel staying experience.
"As close to a western hotel as you will find in HK"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Apr 23, 2012
The hotel is one block away from the East Rail Line "University Station" which connects to the MTR subway system. It will take you about 50 minutes including a few transfers to make it to CENTRAL in Hong Kong Island. The hotel itself is one of the best that I have been to in Kowloon and Hong Kong. The bedroom size is big compared to others in the city and so is the bathroom with a bath tub and separate shower room. Odor-free, clean room with large LCD TV and 2 Full Size comfortable mattresses with very good linen. The service is 5 stars by international standards and hard to match by HK standards. Did not try the buffet restaurant since you can eat outside the hotel for half the price. The taxi to the airport is a quick 40min drive that will cost you about HK$275 / US$35
