"pleasant surprise"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Apr 30, 2012
I read some of the other reviews about this hotel and got a little nervous about what I was walking into. However, I found the hotel to be clean, staff to be friendly and location great. It is a 17th century building so the floors are a bit uneven; however, I think that's part of the experience of staying in a centuries old building. The rooms are modern with all the normal amenities- en suite bathroom, satellite TV, coffee maker. The location is great; it's within a short walking distance to the center of town. There you can find all the shopping, restaurants, pubs and historic buildings. I'd stay here again.
"Head of the River - Oxford"Reviewed by Deanna C of "Los Angeles, CA" on Apr 13, 2012
We had a wonderful time. The room was more comfortable than we expected - amazing bathtub (with jets), HOT water, large clean bathroom, window view of the river ("superior" room was requested), bed more much more comfortable than it looked, free internet worked great, tv included cable stations, and there was a tea kettle and yummy cookies in room. Geese and swans on the river called out regularly, which we enjoyed. Staff was friendly and went out of their way to accomodate us - carrying bags, getting extra cookies, letting our friends into the pub downstairs before opening hours etc. What could have been better.... I was confused about breakfast (only saw cereal and juice - was there more?), adjacent rooms were being refurbished so banging began at 10 am and lasted for hours. No notice was provided this would be done. So, lucky I was up and my teenager didn't care. I'm sure they will be even better though as a result of the upgrades they were doing. Also, when the front desk called us a cab the first time it never arrived. We walked instead - so no big deal. Later another cab was ordered and it left while we were coming down to catch it. SO - make sure you get a cab phone number and I'd recommend calling your own if it's critical. (In our case, to catch a train back to London they had to call a second cab - we made it with 2 mins. to spare). Oh, and a mini fridge would have made it extra great. There is no ice machine or anything - but there IS a small grocery a brief walk away that's open till 11 pm. All in all we will stay there again if we go back to Oxford. We enjoyed it a lot!
"Mercure Hotel - nice place, good deal"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Mar 26, 2012
I really enjoyed my stay. The hotel is clean, well located. The rooms are reasonably quiet; the Tv works weel, and you can even plug in your iPod! The food is good. The staff are very friendly and service oriented. Overall, I found it to be the best price-value relationship in the town. The single rooms are a bit small, though
"Great location, meh service, watch your bill..."Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Mar 20, 2012
This is a stunning old building, kept in pretty great shape. Rooms are quite nice, halls are rather funky, and we found it awfully cold until we asked at the desk and they told us to use the portable heater kept inside the closet (!) which heated the room nicely. We got a fabulous rate through this site. Students at Oxford know that this is the place for parents and visiting professors, and they love being taken to dinner here. You should know that you will pay dearly for a cocktail - dinner is not cheap but not ruinious. The dining room has two stars but we found the service amateurish and the food pretty meh - okay, we are very spoiled San Franciscans who aren't easily impressed by mock haute cuisine. But what frosted us was when they snuck in a mysterious 37GBP ($67) charge on our dinner bill and then studiously ignored our table until we had to walk over to the hostess to get a corrected bill. The mix of pretended grandeur and sub-standard service is a bit jarring. On the plus side, the spa is nice and at least one masseuse was absolutely top rate - really knew her stuff. Front desk was perplexed when we asked if there was a business center where we could print out our boarding passes -- evidently this was an unusual request. In fact, all the desk staff seemed unseasoned, again odd for such an old hotel. But the concierge was much more helpful in all matters.
"Good value and convenient location in Oxford"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Oct 20, 2011
The hotel was well-located, just a block from the train station and two blocks from the bus terminal (for the airports and more). My room was clean and quiet - everything worked. Free WiFi worked well, much better than in the US. It's a five minute walk to George Street and The High, but that was no problem. There's a restaurant, but I chose to get breakfast in the station, and dinner outside the hotel. If I were back in Oxford, I would strongly consider returning to this hotel.
"Linton Lodge, Oxford"Reviewed by Steve L of "CT, USA" on Feb 9, 2010
Pro's: - spotlessly clean and quiet - friendly and helpful staff - nice on site bar and restaurant - in room iron and coffemaker - perfect location for St Hughs college Con's: - about a mile outside of Oxford (5 pound taxi or a nice walk on a safe and well lit street) - hotel is a converted row of houses, therefore has small and very steep staircases everywhere. Elevator does not access all room levels. Don't stay here if you are not good with staircases
