  We stayed at the hotel Henri IV for 3 nights and had a really great experience. The bed was comfortable, the bathrooms were very clean, the people were friendly. It's an old hotel with no elevator, but it's charming and in good condition. The location is fantastic if you like going out at night, but it can get loud since there are so many bars around.

  The hotel is situated outside La Rochelle in the beginning of the university area. There is a yacht maintenance yard across from it, so ask for a room with view of the pool instead to avoid it. It's a fifteen minute walk into the very center of La Rochelle, but it's on quiet pedestrian areas and you can shorten it more by using the cheap water bus that drops you of in the port right next to all the restaurants. Definitely recommend this hotel for a family with young children.
