"Amazing condo on Kite Beach"Reviewed by Tracy O of "Brooklyn, NY" on Feb 23, 2012
We stayed at Watermark for 3 nights in Feb 2012. We booked a rather last-minute trip without doing a lot of research about the area, so weren't sure what to expect. Our jaws dropped as soon as we pulled up--the property is even more beautiful in person than the photos suggest. Our room (on the 3rd floor) was immaculate. The balconies are spacious and look right out onto the beach. The bed was comfortable and all the fixtures were new and modern. Also, a nice feature was the purified water dispenser. This is not a great place to stay if you want a lot of concierge service, as it's more of a condo than a hotel. There was always someone at the front desk to help, but they varied in knowledge of the area--for instance, when we arrived, we asked if there was a place nearby where we could grab lunch, and they just shrugged their shoulders (one of the hands-down best beach cafes in Cabarete is NEXT DOOR). I'd definitely return to Watermark!
"Barcelo Hotel puertoplata - trouble early checkin"Reviewed by Irene I of "Dominican republic" on Jan 4, 2012
This hotel was nice but what really disturbed me was that when we check in early (noon) they charged us 10 usd per person just to enter and eat at the buffet (they didn't give us the room for this payment). This information was not available in this website or their website. I have stayed in Barcelo Punta Cana and other resorts in dominican republic and they don't charge anything at all for early check in and eating at the buffet while waiting 3pm ( normal check in time). I don't know if the staff of the hotel personally put this rule or is a barcelo policy. This first inconvenient make a very negative impression of the hotel.

"Just short of perfect"Reviewed by Michelle H of "New Yokr, NY" on Jun 3, 2011
The hotel itself is gorgeous. The grounds are immaculate. The rooms and big and comfortable and luxurious. Food is pretty great. The only negatives for me happened outside the hotel: - The ocean is not the crystal clear aqua you'll see at other Caribbean locations. - People walk up and down the beach incessantly (as many as 5 people every 10 minutes) to try to sell you jewelry, hats, t-shirts, stuffed animals, etc. - There is nowhere decent to walk to. I'm totally fine spending most of my time in the hotel but sometimes it's nice to walk down the beach for a meal or a drink. The problem is that all the surrounding hotels are all-inclusive and not open to the public. There is a strip mall nearby which a pizza hut and some other unhealthy restaurants and tons of people trying to sell you tour packages. Overall, it was a really nice, relaxing trip. Again, the hotel is gorgeous and clean. The staff is very nice. I just wish that someone had pointed out the above negatives to me. If I knew about them, we probably would have looked elsewhere. PS - If the hotel wants to set up a dinner reservation for you in downtown Puerto Plata, don't go. The food is poor and it's expensive.
