Altona

The area of Altona, just outside Hamburg's city center, is a great place to visit for views of the Elbe River. Head for the Altona Balcony, a landscaped green space which overlooks the flowing waters. The Ottensen district, much of it car-free, has plenty of cafes and shops, and is ideal for a relaxed wander. The botanic garden in Osdorf is another of Altona's attractions.

City Center

Want to go for a turn around the shops in Hamburg? Mönckebergstrasse in the city center is where you want to be – it's a bustling thoroughfare packed with stores, and it leads to the historic, Neo-Renaissance fortress of the Rathaus, or city hall, with its turquoise-tipped tower. A particularly charming spot is the Alsterarkaden, an array of cute boutiques and antique shops tucked under picturesque arches on the waterfront.

Rotherbaum

This hotel is immiediately adjacent to the terminal. It is an excellent option for the night before your flight. Staff if friendly, amenities are fine, internet is free. The "neighborhood" is a parking structure - its only negative.

The breakfast was overpriced but that was my only negative. The Sauna was well-maintained, the Staff knew enough English, with our limited Geman to explain things that we needed to know.
