Baden Hotels

Soak in the bubbling, mineral-enriched waters of Baden-Baden's Roman baths, or lose yourself in the reaching branches and majestic castles of the enchanting Black Forest. Germany's Baden-Wurttemberg region is steeped in unique heritage and folklore, and benefits from a privileged location at the very heart of Europe. A stay among the beautiful gingerbread villages that hide between the Black Forest's tall trees and sloshing waterfalls – with the deep olive and burgundy colors of Stuttgart's vineyards also within reach - is living proof that fairytales really can come true.

Things to see

It's not hard to see why the ethereal Black Forest was central to the Brothers Grimm's mysterious fairytales. With the pointed hats of tall castles peeking above the treetops, and glowing rays of sunlight shining through shadows cast by the forest's spindly fingers, there's a real feeling of magic in the air. Explore on foot, or visit the characterful villages that hide within the forest to taste the sweet chocolate and tart dark cherries of Black Forest Cake. You can indulge more than just a sweet tooth at the celebrated spa town of Baden-Baden. It doesn't matter whether you believe the city's Roman baths and spas have healing powers or not - after braving a cold waterfall, and simmering in the bubbles of a heavenly thermal pool, you'll leave feeling brand new. With any aches and pains now a distant memory, take a stroll through Lichtentaler Allee. This stunning park beams with chromatic colors, whether it's from the violet flowers that are tangled across its bridges, or the blood-red leaves of its fall foliage.

Bag a bargain room with a balcony - for soaking up some sun and forest scenery - and be sure to use the in-room WiFi to share your photos with home.

Where to stay

While remote spa hotels offer a tranquil stay - surrounded by nothing more than tall pine trees and babbling brooks - Baden-Baden's gorgeous hotels, quaint bars, and traditional restaurants are hard to resist. Get a flavor for the area by enjoying a stein of malty beer, and tasting a serving of Barden's delicious lamb spätzle with the locals. If a gleaming mix of new and old sounds appealing, consider crossing the border and staying in France's Strasbourg. Just 10 minutes' drive from Baden-Wurttemberg, you'll see both sides of the city in a single afternoon, as you tour the huge European parliament buildings and the late gothic period Strasbourg Cathedral. A stay in Stuttgart is another option, which puts its extraordinary architecture – like the rocket-shaped turrets of the Old Castle – right on your doorstep.
