Drool over succulent sweet and sour pork, or be braver and sample steamed frogs legs on lotus leaf - with a hint of ginger - in the birthplace of Cantonese food. With its glowing skyline, and ever-expanding borders, Guangzhou provides a taste of modern China, and an introduction to the enticing flavors on offer here. As one of China's mega cities, Guangzhou can seem a little intimidating and impenetrable to first time visitors. Get to know it a little, however, and you'll fall for this destination - where a single afternoon can see you shopping with a mass of humanity in gargantuan malls, before retiring to the blissful solitude of flower-carpeted parks and solemn - dragon-carving adorned - temples.

Things to see

The sounds of water spilling across smooth rocks, and buzzing bees dancing with violet flowers, may not be what you'd expect from China's 3rd largest city, but South China Botanical Garden is just one of countless oases from hectic city life, waiting to be discovered in Guangzhou. Elsewhere, you can hear rumbling chanting from Buddhist monks at the 1,700-year-old Filial Piety Temple, or watch a mass of red, orange and black coy carp swirling like underwater flames at Baomo Scenery Gardens. Look up from practically anywhere in Guangzhou, and you'll see the modern face of the city represented by the needle-like Canton Tower, which punctures the sky. While you could choose to ride its hair-curlingly high cable car - which skirts the roof's edge, and gives terrifying views of ant-like cars below - a more peaceful way to appreciate one of the tallest structures on Earth is to bob along the Pearl River on a night cruise. Vivid rainbows of color swirl up and down the tower, as a choreographed LED show brings it to life after dark.

You can be cracking open the bottle of iced champagne that's waiting for you, and sinking into a rose petal-sprinkled bath, within minutes of arriving at your 5-star Guangzhou hotel. With motorized treadmills in the rooms - and views of the gleaming skyline available from the comfort of the Egyptian cotton bed sheets - Guangzhou is in a class of its own when it comes to luxury. The city's accommodation caters for all, with backpackers able to enjoy comfortable beds, and the use of the free WiFi to check-in with home. Mid-range options, meanwhile, provide free breakfasts, large in-room televisions, and hot drink facilities.

Where to stay

The honking of horns, and growling of car engines, will feel a million miles away as you sink into a thick mud bath in the Conghua Hot Spring District. Here, only the rustling of the trees, and caws of jet-black birds, will distract you from your book or outdoor massage. Or, you could try the European-influenced Shamian Island. If you're feeling a little groggy in the morning, just head downstairs to the island's color-splashed park, where you can stretch and exercise with the locals, before fueling up for the day with a cup of sweet Wang Laoji Herbal Tea, from an authentic teahouse.

How to get to Guangzhou

It can be hard to get your head around the sheer size of Guangzhou, so it's fortunate that there's a highly effective public transport system in operation. Seven metro lines run across the city, and you can hop straight onto a tram, or bus, from just outside Baiyun International Airport’s terminal. Or, you can keep your feet on the ground and arrive in the city by train. There are 3 major railway stations, which connect you with Hong Kong – and its international airport - in around 2 hours.
