Lake Powell - Glen Canyon National Park Hotels

Try and keep on your feet as you skim across the water, or sit back and chat while waiting to land that one big bite that will make your day – and your dinner - at Arizona's Lake Powell. Formed by the construction of the mammoth Glen Canyon Dam in 1963, the lake's waters flooded back 186-miles, filling the copper-colored Glen Canyon, and creating a brand new scenic watersports hub in the process.

Things to see

Glen Canyon Dam's wall of concrete is an engineering triumph, and can be viewed from the swooping, arched road bridge that spans the gorge, just in front of it. While the human influence on the area is clear, dig a little deeper to discover the impression left by Glen Canyon's prehistoric residents at the Big Water Visitor Center. Here, you'll find interesting exhibitions displaying the fossilized bones of dinosaurs that once roamed here. Travel a little further downstream, and the completely natural wonder of Horseshoe Bend will reveal itself. The frothy emerald water of the Colorado River suddenly, dramatically, loops back on itself, creating a sweeping meander that is prime photography material. Having seen the sights, take to the lake, where the water's spray will cool your face as you explore the flooded chasm. Part the waters around Wahweap Marina in a motorboat or, if you can, take on the challenge of kayaking through the lake's branch-like offshoots, before hiking to Rainbow Bridge. There's no pot of gold waiting, but the sight of the huge natural arch, painted golden by the sun, is all the reward you could need. If those adventures sound a little too high-octane, stay close to your hotel and simply relish the stillness of the lake, as you cut into a pink steak on a gentle dinner cruise.
