Known in its early years as Fort Calgary, it has also been nicknamed “Cow Town” thanks to its Western and cattle-rearing connections. In July the daily temperatures are around 70ºF and in January close to freezing at around 32ºF. Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, a rodeo and livestock show, is the standout event of the year in July.

How to get to Calgary

Visitors travel to Calgary via Calgary International Airport (YYC), which is situated about ten miles northeast of downtown. Calgary Airport has a number of highly rated airport hotels. You can also reach the town via a Greyhound bus service (the terminus is west of downtown). The nearest VIS rail station is in Edmonton, to the north.
