Reunion Hotels

Enjoy a typically French morning, tasting buttery croissants and a strong cup of coffee, while listening to the sea's whisper in the unmistakably tropical surroundings of Reunion. As an overseas department, the island is an idyllic spec of France dropped into the stunning setting of the Indian Ocean. Considering it's only 28 miles wide, Reunion's scenery is incredibly diverse, mixing jagged emerald mountains with oozing volcanoes and sparsely populated white beaches. The culture here is equally varied, blending French, African, and Asian influences to create a colorful, beguiling place to visit.

Things to see

While you can easily swim amongst a vibrant confetti of tropical fish while scuba diving around the island, the Aquarium de la Reunion is ideal if you'd rather stay dry while viewing the marine life. Movie theater-sized walls of glass hold back sinister sharks, as they stalk the husks of shipwrecks, and alien-like octopuses, as their sucker-covered tentacles propel them through the water. Head inland from the aquarium to see some of the island's best scenery, and discover the rustling flow of the Cascade de Grand Galet waterfall. Its plummeting water separates into thin strands, making it appear as though a head of silvery grey hair is tumbling gracefully down the dark rocks. The beautiful waterfalls, and jungle-coated canyons, will feel like distant memories as you hike up the post-apocalyptic slopes of Piton de la Fournaise - which is 1 of the world's most active volcanoes. Dominating the World Heritage Site of Reunion National Park, its huge crater-like caldera could have been taken straight from the surface of Mars. Visit during an eruption – which happens on a roughly annual basis - to see the hellish furnace opening to spew out wide rivers of fire.

Hotels in Reunion

From the welcoming glass of champagne you receive on arrival, to the final drink of rum punch you enjoy before leaving, Reunion's hotel staff will go out of their way to make your stay extra special. 5 star hotels let you look out over gleaming beaches from your balcony, before sleeping in cool, thatch-roofed rooms. Prepare for an active day hiking with a tender massage in a sumptuous spa, or by loosening your muscles with a swim in your hotel's crystal-clear infinity pool. Cheaper Reunion hotels scale down the luxury a tiny bit, but you can still worship the sun on pretty outdoor patios, and summon fresh drinks with a raised finger.

Where to stay

It may be part of France, but Reunion's charm lies in its utopian fusion of cultures. Visit Saint-Denis to enjoy the island's cuisine – whether you want meaty French cassoulets, Indian curried fish, or local creole dishes like wasp lavae rougail. The culture combination means there's always a party happening nearby - whether it's dragon dancing for Chinese New Year on the fire-lit streets of St Pierre, Hindu firewalking in the village of Petite France, or the pounding percussion of maloya music performances during Saint-Paul's celebrations to mark the anniversary of the end of slavery.

How to get to Reunion

Roland Garros Airport is the main gateway to the island, taking flights from Madagascar, South Africa, Mauritius and a selection of French cities like Paris and Marseille. It also connects the northern capital of Saint-Denis with the smaller Pierrefonds Airport in the south. Car rental is available, and driving on the island is relatively simple – but be warned that the roads do get busy. Arranging airport transfer, and excursions, with your hotel is a simple way to get about.
