At the heart of the West Country, the county of Somerset consists of many charming English towns surrounded by the rolling green hills of the countryside. Many of the areas have hundreds of years of history behind them, and in addition to museums and historic homes, you'll find sites with artifacts from the Iron Age and other fascinating eras. Along the coast you'll find many popular seaside towns which are the perfect spot for a family vacation along the unspoiled golden sand beaches.

Things to see

The limestone rocks of Cheddar Gorge and Caves have been formed over millions of years, and they attract cavers and rock climbers from around the world. At the gorge you can enjoy a cliff top walk with breathtaking views of the lush green countryside for miles around, and you can then explore the caves under your feet, with family friendly adventure tours, or explore deeper with specialist guides who can take you through crawl spaces and on an exciting journey. There are further natural wonders at the rolling green hills of Glastonbury Tor. Here you'll find miles of hiking trails, and perched atop the highest hill is the grand stone Church of St Michael which has been linked to Arthurian legends and all kinds of mythology over the years, and from this spot you can see for miles over the surrounding counties. Minehead Beach is one of the most popular attractions in this charmingly old-fashioned seaside town, and there's a long stretch of sandy beach with a colorful promenade, as well as a smaller, pebble beach close to the harbor where you can watch fishing boats come in.
