"Hotel Royal"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Oct 13, 2012
The Royal is 10 minutes walk from the Duomo, a short way off of Etnea, the main road in Catania, and so has a comfortable separation from most of the traffic. While the outside looks a little sad, like most of Catania, upon entering the Royal one finds a first rate hotel with beautiful and clean rooms. The staff are very helpful; the wireless works and is moderately fast; the restaurant is excellent with a good wine cellar. We stayed here on 2 separate nights, in 2 different rooms. While a first floor room was very nice looking, one heard street noise. The second time we had a third floor room facing the court yard - beautiful and quiet. This is at least a 4 star hotel (even by US ratings). I would highly recommend the Royal to anyone visiting Catania.

The rooms are very clean, comfortable, and a good size by the standards of many European hotels. The decor is bizarre, but that does not detract from the comfort. Rooms on the street can be noisy at night. The staff is friendly and helpful and speak English reasonably well. The location is convenient to Via Etnea, shopping, and the historic district. The neighborhood looks seedy, but is only a block from local pubs and bars and only five minutes from Via Etnea. There are usually plenty of people on the street at night and I did not feel unsafe.
"Pleasant hotel"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Oct 5, 2012
Hotel was very pleasant - old, refurbished. It was not convenient to the sites and downtown. Although downtown Catania leaves a lot to be desired.

location was even more convenient than I realized from the map and the hotel is very nice (a converted palazzo w/hammered beams), although it's above a MacDonald's on a piazza so a little noisy in the evening. I'd read that it was two flights up from the entrance to the lobby but it was a straight shot and not difficult for me. all the rooms are on the lobby floor or up one more floor (there is no elevator but if you can manage the stairs, it's a great place to stay.) staff was very nice. there was an air conditioner in my room that I could only turn down a few degrees, but the windows open and it cooled off at night.
"Close to Catania Airport"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Sep 8, 2012
The pool and private sandy beach were welcome amenities the day before a 6am flight.

OK but hotel needs a quick makeover. Wallpaper is peeling in bathroom. Mold in tub area. Also I found it unusual that there is a charge for wireless. The hotel is otherwise very classy and beutiful place. The evening bartender was outstanding.
