"Not a tropical experience but very convenient"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Oct 4, 2012
Chantillys on the Bay was a very nice hotel, particularly after being on an outer island for a few days. The free internet access down in the lobby is a real plus in Vila (they charge for in-room access). The rooms are adequate, but certainly not tropical style. The views are wonderful out to the bay and to the sunsets. There is no elevator but the stairs are wide and easy. The pool is well-maintained, which is good since the swimming and snorkeling at the site is less than amazing. The restaurant downstairs,Tillys, is very good and their service impeccable. The hotel is within walking distance of a wide variety of restaurants when you tire of paying the prices at Tillys. I saw many single travelers that are housed here through business. There are many, also, who come from town to use the internet and drink coffee. All in all, a good experience made better by the staff!
"A great tourist spot, but not a getaway place"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Oct 3, 2012
If you want a high energy place, this could do. There were many Australian, Japanese and New Zealand tourists, and a good bit of cheesy touristy stuff. For example, there were a group of kastom dancers from "Tanna" who really live on Efate, and a ni-Van who climbed the coconut tree to harvest the coconuts for an audience. There are some people who want that type of show for their vacation. The hotel is a good ways out of town, so you must use a taxi or a bus to get to Vila, unless you like long walks in fast traffic. Be wary of the rates the bus/taxi drivers will quote, as they know a tourist when they see one. The standard rate for the bus as of October 2012 is 150 vt. The staff was very welcoming. The reason I rated it low on cleanliness is that as you walk from building to building on the grounds, there were many meal trays left on the sidewalks and at the doors from room service, and the same at the pools. The pool was fun, and the best, perhaps, certainly the biggest, on the island. The harsh florescent lighting in the room was energy efficient but difficult to tolerate. I saw a nanny very appropriately chastising a child for misbehavior, and the kids playground looked fun! The food was good, and expensive, especially the bar service seemed high.
"Good place to stay."Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Jun 9, 2012
Good place to stay......my only complaint was that my AC wouldn't stay below 23 degrees C. I could turn it down to 18 and it would stay there for about 90 seconds. Then automatically return itself to either 23 or 25 degrees. After spending the previous week on two different islands in Vanuatu where AC wasn't even an option, I was really looking forward to a cool room. Only a minor inconvenience.
