Russia. Check your sanity at the border, especially if you are from the US. Spent a week here with my wife. The room was narrow but cozy and the high ceilings didn't make it feel claustrophobic. It was a bit hot (the nature of heat in Russia), but you can open the window. The room was clean and didn't stink. The shower leaked (the seals were old) - but I found a way to keep the doors halway open so that the water dripped into the shower. Not much room for extra clothes, but we managed. Hey, you're IN THE HEART of St. Petersburg! Seriously, you can walk to two subway stations (Mayakovskaya and Moskovskiy Vokzal), that is super-convenient. Having the TV was pretty nice, though the overabundance of criminal dramas was a bit too much. This is a converted PRE-Soviet era apartment, so... some rooms use a regular key, some rooms use a key lock. You have to leave the key at the front desk when you leave. It was pretty quiet - most of the time. Front desk staff was super-friendly (hi, Polina and Natalya) and are pretty good at English. Breakfast - beats any breakfast in the US. Coffee is good, and have a choice of hot dogs (have to ask, they'll boil them for you), pate, yogurt, toast, salami, cheese, and a whole bunch of cereals. The girls will get a taxi for you (cost 700 rubles) which will pick you up by the door.
