Fortaleza has long been a favorite holiday destination for Brazilian tourists, and travelers from all over the world are beginning to follow their lead. This exhilarating metropolis boasts a blissful tropical climate, miles of bustling sandy coastline, a thriving street culture, and colorful markets packed to bursting with local crafts. Its nightlife is legendary – if you're heading out after dark, be prepared to dance the night away to the sultry rhythms of the region's famous Forró music.

Things to see

Iracema Beach is the city's most bohemian hang-out spot. Here you'll find quirky art shops, cool night spots, and the famous Iracemea Statue. This is just one of many monuments to the heroine of a novel by Fortaleza's most celebrated former resident, José de Alencar. While the city's beaches are great places to chill out, swimming can be hazardous due to strong currents. For all sorts of aquatic fun, you should head instead to Beach Park Water Park. Here you'll find lagoon-like swimming pools, and an array of chutes, slides, and rapids offering thrills and spills for the whole family. Coco Ecological Park is the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Named after the Rio Coco river, which runs through it, this large conservation area is home to all kinds of birds, reptiles, and fish, making it a haven for nature lovers. If you're craving a spot of retail therapy after all that time outdoors, Aldeota Shopping Center is a sleek modern mall, which also boasts a cinema and bowling alley.
