"Reasonable hotel, average location"

The hotel is clean, quiet and comfortable. It's exactly what you would expect from a Holiday Inn Express, not going to win any awards for luxury, but great value. The surrounding area is one of the uglier parts of Heidelberg, although it seemed to be safe enough, both in the daytime and at night.
If you have a car this hotel is fine; on-street parking is free though it's a bit far from Heidelberg's center. Breakfast is good; restaurant wasn't open to try for dinner but looked very nice. Clean room with wood floors, and a helpful night manager.

Altstadt Hotel is very close to the bulk of the sights to see in Heidelberg. It's on one end of the Old Town, within walking distance of Heiliggeist Kirche, the castle, the old bridge, and an excellent local history museum (the Kurpfälzisches Museum). It's also only a few yards away from the Bismarckplatz, where you can find a tram or bus going wherever you need to go. The hotel itself is rather spare (or at least my room was), but it was comfortable. I wouldn't recommend it for a group, but for a solo traveler or a couple, it works just fine.
This is the only European hotel where we washed our clothes and it was not expensive. Only 4 Euros per load (it was always 2 loads). All other european hotels charged seems like 10 times more for same service. Location is great because it is close to train station and walk distance to old town. Negatives: nearby drunks have a place to spend their time and can yell load at night at each other. But location is NOT dangerous - we stayed there with our child. Blankets are too small in size.TV was small in size with only few (I believe 4 channels) . One positive thing I forgot to mention is - the hotel has a lobby in a design of a sunroom. I used it all the time to meet my friend. I am glad they had it. I would recommend this hotel.
