Recife Hotels

Crowd onto tightly-packed beaches to soak up the sun, explore the designer shops, and glamorous fashion stores of multi-story megamalls, and discover the delights of the natural environment on walking tours through the surrounding jungle. Recife is a modern, vibrant city, where a thin line of towering skyscrapers glitter in the afternoon sun, casting shards of light over the lush tropical vegetation that creeps around its edge. Urban cafés, and trendy restaurants line the streets, and the trailing waters of the Rio Capibaribe River flow noiselessly into the sea.

Things to see

The stark white façade of the Itaipava Arena Pernambuco dominates the expansive tropical jungle of the São Lourenço da Mata region. Built in preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, it’s a modern arena that welcomes nearly 50,000 people to visit its modern stage. Closer to the coastline, the Recife Shopping Center is overshadowed by the wall of skyscrapers that tower above. It’s a modern mall, where over 450 stores beckon you inside, enticing you with their trendy window displays, and designer clothing. A multi-screen cinema shows the latest films into the night, and the aroma of ethnic eateries from the food court waft through the cavernous galleries. The nearby Boa Viagem Beach edges an affluent area of Recife. It’s crammed with beachgoers during the day, a commercialized stretch of sand served by high-rise hotels, glamorous restaurants, and trendy urban cafés. Concessions line the promenade, selling refreshing drinks, and beach toys, and a parade of brightly colored parasols blocks out the sand in the height of season. Beneath the red tiled roof of the Sao Jose Market, gaudy trinkets, and cheap souvenirs are hawked by local dealers. Street food vendor’s fry freshly caught fish in roadside stalls, and newly-picked coconuts are shelled for drinking.

Hotels in Recife

Hotels in Recife are found mainly on the sands, or a block or two back from the glistening ocean. They stand wall to wall, in mainly high-rise buildings, each vying for the best sea views. Mid-range hotels in Recife make up the majority of places to stay. In general, they all offer an excellent standard of accommodation, and feature tiled bedroom floors which are typical of the area. Flat-screen televisions, WiFi, complimentary buffet breakfasts, and luxurious bathrooms with free toiletries are the type of benefits you’ll enjoy here. Budget travelers can find a few lower priced hotels, although at the very bottom end of the range you might find yourself sharing in a room filled with bunk beds.

Where to stay

The Boa Viagem area sits on the south side of the beach. It’s a quieter side of the city, and most popular with locals who prefer to avoid the hordes of clamoring tourists. The soft white sands of the beach are overlooked by multi-level apartment buildings, and a few office blocks. Further south still, and leaving the main town of Recife behind, the pretty cobbled streets of Porto de Galinhas have a wonderfully Bohemian air, abandoning skyscrapers in favor of stone built shops, casual cafes, and local artist workshops. A few garish souvenir stores sit in its center, near the solid bulk of the fort that used to dominate this stretch of coastline, and some homely discount hotels.
