Ski the snowy peaks of the Cascade Mountains in the morning, tee off a leisurely game of golf in the afternoon, and round off your day smashing through frothy rapids courtesy of the Deschutes River. Bend is a gateway to jagged mountains, roaring rivers, and still lakes that never fail to capture the imaginations of outdoor enthusiasts. With more than its fair share of restaurants - serving everything from all-American burgers to gourmet cuisine - and great beer running through the veins of its bars, Bend is an enchanting and varied place to spend some time.

Things to see

While the natural wonders – perfect for mountain biking and hiking - that lie nearby are major draws to the area, don’t make the mistake of overlooking Bend itself. The redevelopment of the Old Mill District saw new life breathed into 2 formerly redundant lumber mill buildings, transforming them into a hip space, where art galleries mingle with restaurants and boutique shops. Beer fans will quickly detect a hint of yeast in the air from the town's many beer producers. Hop over to the Deschutes Brewery for a free tour - and don't worry, there are plenty of opportunities to sample the local produce. The brewery's connected pub has an especially unique flavor to it. Try grilled salmon, plucked from a nearby river, that's flavored with beer-infused BBQ sauce, before finishing your meal off with a so-wrong-it-works chocolate and beer cookie. As evening approaches, check the concert schedule at the charming, outdoor Les Schwab Amphitheater. Allowing the music to wash over you, as the sunset reveals stars over the mountains lingering in the background, is an otherworldly experience.
