Its huge historic district is a living link to the region's colonial past, with almost 300 blocks worth of historic downtown full of characterful buildings and repurposed relics now serving the modern citizens. Add to that a nearby beach, annual wine and music festivals and a lively restaurant scene and there's something for everyone.

Things to see

It's not all history in Wilmington, and one of the jewels in the region's crown is Wrightsville Beach where you can relax on golden sands, or take a trip to see nesting birds on a guided tour of the bird sanctuary. If you're into more hi-octane pursuits, however, you'll find that Wrightsville Beach is a haven for activity, with everything from surfing to paddleboarding on offer, along with equipment rental and lively, hands-on instructors to help hone your skills. For a different sort-of sea-going lesson, you can pay a visit to see the imperious Battleship North Carolina which saw active service in World War Two and is now moored across the river from downtown Wilmington. Tours of the boat offer a great insight into the military past of the area, and one of its proudest achievements. There's family fun on offer at the North Carolina Aquarium and Jungle Rapids Fun Park too.
