Jacksonville in northeastern Florida is the US's largest city in terms of area, which means it's essential to use your own transport if you want to get around. It is located on the St. John's River but there is an array of Jacksonville beaches 12 miles to the east on the Atlantic Ocean. A vast 1901 fire laid waste to early Jacksonville and thousands of buildings were rebuilt over the next decade. Jacksonville was named for President Andrew Jackson; rather disparagingly, it is also called “the biggest city in South Georgia.”

When to visit Jacksonville

Jacksonville has hot summers with average July temperatures of 91ºF and moderate winters with average January temperatures at around 64ºF. Thus most of the year is a good time to visit, though in season hurricanes are always a threat. Many visitors travel to Jacksonville for April's Jacksonville Jazz Festival and golf is a year-round draw.

How to get to Jacksonville

Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) is 12 miles north of the city. The city itself lies at the intersection of two major interstates: the north-south I-95 and the I-10 running from the west of the state. Amtrak trains also serve the city. Downtown there is the Skyway Monorail. There is also a water taxi service, ferrying people across the St. John's River and convenient if you decide to stay in a riverfront hotel such as the popular Hyatt Regency Riverfront.

Jacksonville attractions

Jacksonville has many attractions downtown with a corresponding number of hotels. The Southbank Riverwalk links the historic center with the Museum of Science and History. Further to the west is the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens. You can enjoy a stay at Atlantic, Neptune, and Jacksonville beaches, which means you can stay in a hotel near Jacksonville close to the beaches and use you own transport to visit the city. Could use a little updating because of its age but is a great place to stay great location. You get a full breakfast buffet which is really really good and there's a comedy zone theater there in the hotel where you can get live comedy Wednesday through Saturday night.

The hotel itself was very nice. The staff was friendly, but the gentleman who checked us out tended to mumble. Our stay would have been a little better if there were scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage for breakfast, like other hotels we have stayed in. There was also many noisy guests late into the night and early in the morning, but that was not the fault of the hotel.
