Things to see

The Parris Island Museum focuses on both the history of the Marine Corps and the Port Royal region, with exhibits dating back to the days of the Native Americans, the various colonies of the island, and the present day. Set on the local Marine Corps recruitment depot, you'll often see graduations and ceremonies happening around the museum, as well as lots of special events to commemorate those who have fought in past wars. Some of these men are buried in the small, white graves of Beaufort National Cemetery which has many internments dating back to the Civil War, as well as many major wars since then. You can wander around this serene, well shaded graveyard and learn more about the history of some of the soldiers buried there. The Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park also has a peaceful environment, with a walk along the harbor to see the boats coming in, and facilities such as a playground to keep the kids occupied.
