Hilo Hotels

The capital of Hawaii Island, Hilo is the setting for some of nature’s most dramatic and impressive spectacles. From bubbling, steaming volcanoes to dense jungle chattering with life, everywhere you look in this land of rolling clouds and rainbows is extraordinary. The harbor and the sea plays a key role here, the swells and tides providing a bounty of fish, which will soon be sizzling at a barbecue on the beach while local performers demonstrate an exuberant, traditional hula dance.

Things to see

Hilo’s city center is a good place to start. A regular Farmers’ Market is held here, offering a tempting assortment of fresh fruit and vegetables, gathered from the rich pickings available in this well-nurtured, tropical landscape. Craft products, designed and made by local artists, also adorn some of the stalls here. The rest of the city is a quaint place, full of charming, wooden buildings, little changed over the centuries. Museums and galleries are dotted about, well-maintained places which present the island’s heritage. Beyond the city and into the wilds, you’ll discover the spectacular Rainbow Falls, a tall, graceful waterfall, where rainbows glint and glimmer in the spray. A bit further out is the Volcanoes National Park. Here, trails lead you through a starkly beautiful landscape of ancient and active volcanic activity. The star of the park, Kilauea, brims with molten lava, attracting plenty of would-be volcanologists to its rim.

Typically, these hotels have bright and tropical furnishings to cheer any mood, and rooms are simple but well-equipped. Some have free WiFi; almost all provide complimentary breakfasts, as well as in-room tea and coffee making facilities.

Where to stay

For a romantic getaway, try one of the luxury resorts on the edge of the city center, close enough to all the main attractions and varied restaurants, but far enough that you have the sense of being away from everything and where you have views of the volcanoes or sea. If you’d rather be right in the action, or you’re searching for a budget hotel, the city center is the ideal location, and has plenty of hotels to choose from. Alternatively, if you plan to spend your time hiking and exploring, there are cabins available at the Volcanoes National Park.

How to get to Hilo

Kona Airport is Hawaii Island’s main point of entry and receives flights from several airports across the USA and Canada. The journey from Kona to Hilo is around 90 minutes, and the route is served by frequent shuttle buses, coaches, and taxis. Alternatively, you may wish to hire a car. The other option is the smaller Hilo Airport, located just 3 miles outside Hilo city center. Flights connect with Honolulu, Hawaii’s capital, so it is also a convenient option, particularly if you plan to visit other areas of the archipelago. Many of the hotels offer their own airport shuttle services from here.
