Willows Hotels

See some of the country's best bird life, while basking in the breezy, climate enjoyed by the sleepy Californian town of Willows. Offering a slice of secluded solace, it's impossible not to relax while walking the streets of this quaint town – unless the rubber's burning, and the tires are squealing at Thunderhills Race Track, of course. Spend some time reconnecting with simple pleasures, like a stroll through Jensen Park - where you'll hear parents cheering on their kids in Little League ball games - before enjoying a picnic sound-tracked by the gurgle of Walker Creek.

Things to see

The sight – and sound - of a chaotic cloud of migrating snow geese is just one of the incredible natural experiences you can enjoy at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. Designated as an area for migratory birds to stop and recharge their batteries, it's home to more than 300 different species of feathered friends. Have some patience, and you may even be lucky enough to see the graceful white head, and curled yellow beak, of a bald eagle sweeping through the air above the lakes. There aren't too many mountain ranges in the world that can be tackled in a single afternoon, but the unique Sutter Buttes – often described as Earth's smallest mountain range – is certainly one. Be aware that hikes across this 10-mile long landform need to be booked through the Sutter Buttes Regional Land Trust, as public access is highly limited. Back in Willows itself, you can browse the town's museum, which sits inside a gracefully columned former library building, surrounded by fragrant pink roses. Immerse yourself in the town's history, by touching the flowing fabric of moth-bitten dresses, and looking at dusty road signs, and greying portraits, which all have their own stories to tell.

A stay in the town is ideal for enjoying a little peace and quiet, and simply lying around the hotel pool - with nothing more than a book to occupy yourself - is a blissful change of pace. Motels in the city offer the basics, like WiFi, and wide double beds - along with perks like warm spa baths and in-room refrigerators. You can get to know the other guests in the homely lobby area, or by sharing a few drinks in the fully stocked bar.

Where to stay

Most of the city's hotels lie to the east of the town, along Humboldt Avenue – and there are some great restaurants nearby. Sink your teeth into all-American foods - like thick, cheese-smothered burgers - or try a taste of Old California, and enjoy Mexican carne asada - covered in a juicy tomato salsa. The nearby city of Chico can also offer plenty of hotels, and you'll be able to explore the amazing basalt rock formations that are chiseled into Bidwell Park's landscape, during your stay. The park has something for every outdoor enthusiast - whether you want to swim in cool creeks, mountain bike along jagged ridges, or knock golf balls down flowing fairways.

How to get to Willows

Sacramento International Airport provides flights from across the US, Mexico, and Canada, and there's a wide choice of car rental in the terminal.
