Atlantic Hotels

Located just west of Des Moines, Atlantic has a rather distinctive name which was apparently down to a coin toss. According to legend, the founders had estimated it was around midway between the 2 oceans, and left it up to chance whether to call their settlement Atlantic or Pacific. Today, it's probably only a little more hectic than it was then. Atlantic is still a place to relax, take in the lush green scenery, browse farmers' markets and perhaps practice your swing at Nishna Hills Golf Club. A welcome escape from the hurly burly of bigger cities.

Things to see

Given the quaint nature of Atlantic, it's perhaps appropriate that one of its most famous buildings is the log cabin in the City Park. It was originally built back in 1863, and was carefully relocated here more than a century later, where it stands as an emblem of America's pioneer past. Another great green space is Sunnyside Park, where there's a skate park, tennis courts, and outdoor swimming pool, not to mention expanses of grass that are perfect for picnics. Look out for the Old Country School House, another nostalgic monument to the good old days. To soak up the atmosphere and mingle with locals, take a stroll down Chestnut Street, where you'll find plenty of boutiques to browse in, gift shops to buy souvenirs, and some fine eateries serving up good hearty fare, from spicy tacos ozzing with melting cheese and zingy sour cream to succulent steaks smothered in creamy peppercorn sauce. If you're in the mood to explore, head out beyond Atlantic's city limits to see Elk Horn's Danish windmill. It's the real deal, having once stood in Denmark back in the 19th century before being shipped over and rebuilt right here in Iowa where it now stands as a pleasingly surreal landmark.

In other words, you certainly won't have to blow most of your budget on accommodation when visiting Atlantic.

Where to stay

There's not a huge selection of hotels in Atlantic to choose from. That said, they are well located in the heart of the area, meaning you won't be far from the shopping district of Chestnut Street or the relaxing, emerald green swathes of the public parks. On top of these, you can also opt to stay in neighboring cities such as Harlan and Audobon, which offer a greater range and diversity of hotels. Almost all budgets will be comfortably catered for.

How to get to Atlantic

One of the advantages of Atlantic, in terms of the local geography, is that it’s pretty close to the sprawl of Des Moines. As well as being well worth visiting in its own right, it also boasts Des Moines International Airport, which is just minutes from the city center and offers flights to and from a wide range of cities. There is also another gateway if you're flying into the region, and that's Eppley Airfield which is across the state line in Omaha, and also serves flights from a good number of destinations.
