Jekyll Island Hotels

Play golf across a unique course that winds its way through a preserved island paradise, embark on a mission to save endangered turtles in the moments after their birth, and sip cocktails in elegant ocean side bars as the orange sun sets on another wonderful day. Jekyll Island is a tiny paradise of playful theme parks and desirable palatial homes. Mammoth villas stand proudly behind screens of lush vegetation on winding coastal roads and the chatter of excited children in packed out water parks can be heard on the wafting breeze.

Things to see

Life in Jekyll Island State Park is laid-back and slow. This picture-perfect paradise is an unusual combination of vast marshland teeming with wildlife, unique preservation areas, and unspoiled sandy beaches. It’s where affluent American’s have a holiday home; colossal villas in sprawling estates overlooking the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is an important conservation site set on the edge of the island. During hatching season, visitors can watch from a safe distance as ungainly hatchlings flip their way through the sand on their instinctive first voyage to the ocean. Join one of the night walks with an experienced guide to view mother turtles laying their eggs, or work alongside biologists on the beach at dawn to hunt for nests and keep them safe. Over at the Summer Waves Water Park there’s a host of rides to keep kids of all ages entertained. Chill out on the lazy river as it meanders around in a loop, make a splash in the kiddie area with tiny children, or squeal on your way down a looping flume before disappearing below the surface of a cool plunge pool.

Hotels in Jekyll Island

Hotels in Jekyll Island have an elegant and family-friendly feel, set in vast private estates on the edge of verdant golf courses or along the coastline with sublime views towards the distant horizon. Luxury hotels in Jekyll Island make quite the statement. Towering turrets reminiscent of our favorite theme parks, delightful guestrooms that cater for whole families, private casinos, and al fresco restaurants all combine to give the impression of a top entertainments area. There’s certainly some more modest accommodation on offer. The rooms aren’t as grand, and there isn’t any on-site entertainment apart from outdoor swimming pools, but with plenty of exciting attractions elsewhere on the island, it’s not a difficult compromise.

Where to stay

The southern tip of the island, where South Beach View Drive curves back on itself in a loop towards the Jekyll Sound is the best place to find discount hotels, a little out of the way but still in a wonderfully sublime spot with extensive natural foliage. Typically, most hotels in Jekyll Island are tucked between pricey private housing along the shorefront at Beach View Drive North, edging onto the back of the tempting Indian Mound Golf Club and just a stroll from seaside cafés and elegant bistros. There are more to choose from on the inside coast where Old Plantation Road trails past curious bookshops towards the expansive grey tarmac of the Jekyll Island Airport.

How to get to Jekyll Island

Despite having its own airport, it’s not overly useful for foreign visitors. Instead, aim to arrive at Jacksonville International Airport to the south, a 1 hour drive from Florida to Georgia. It’s definitely easiest to hire your own car for the journey but the route is simple enough to follow. Having a car also lets you head back to the mainland for nearby sights like the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.
