Manhattan Beach Hotels

Grab your swimwear, pop on your shades, and hit the palm-tree lined beach that this Californian community is famous for. Whether it's diving through the air to make a spectacular return while playing beach volleyball, jogging above the waves on Manhattan Beach Pier, or holding your nerve while surfing a frothing Pacific roller - you'll feel free to do what you want, when you want here. If you get a strange sense of déjà vu, that's because the scenic beach is often used in films and television shows - with the OC, 90210, and Starsky and Hutch all being recent examples.

Things to see

On a sunny day, head straight for the golden sands of Manhattan Beach to feel the warm glow of the sun on your skin. Lie back and watch waves crashing and crumpling around the mussel-coated wooden feet of the pier, dolphins surfacing to splutter water into the air, and Elegant Tern birds dive-bombing into the waves in search of a fishy meal. Walk out along Manhattan Beach Pier for views of the city, stretching along the coastline, or to visit the end of pier aquarium - where you'll see baby sharks, and learn about the conservation efforts taking place. For a break from the ocean, head into the city to Polliwog Park. Unpack a picnic on the grass, listen to a brass band's rousing tunes at the amphitheater, or throw yourself into a game of disc golf to float frisbees along the park's 9-hole course. Sweet smells drift out of the park's botanical gardens, where you can see native flowers - including the sky-shaded California bluebell, and fiery California poppy - spilling color across the grass.

Where to stay

Manhattan Beach is perfectly located, letting you stay close – but not too close – to LAX International Airport. A stopover in the city is ideal if you want to head out to taste sweet California Dream cocktails, or to eat delicious artisan foods like bacon biscuits, grilled octopus and nut encrusted mahi mahi fish. Nearby Hermosa Beach is also a great place to stay, and you're sure to get sucked in by the ever-present festival feeling that exists there. Sense the sand between your toes as you dance to the live music of the Hermosa Beach Sunset Concert series, or admire the skilled brushwork of California's best painters during May's Fiesta Hermosa arts festival.

How to get to Manhattan Beach

LAX is just 6 miles away from Manhattan Beach's coastal community, and the 232 bus links the city with the huge international airport. Or, you could beat the queues by looking for cheaper domestic flights to the smaller Long Beach Airport, which is only 20 minutes' drive away. Downtown LA and Amtrak's Union Station are around half an hour's drive away from Manhattan Beach - if the traffic's on your side - and they are both linked with the airport by regular shuttle busses.
