Pittsburgh Hotels

Back in the 19th century days of coal and steel factories nobody thought Pittsburgh would ever shrug off its industrial image. But that day has definitely come, and everyone’s raving about this Pennsylvania metropolis. Hilly tree-shrouded neighborhoods scramble above downtown’s skyscrapers, where professionals dash between meetings, foodies head off to the newest restaurant, and couples stroll riverside in Point State Park. With lush green spaces, lively pubs, and plenty of cultural appeal – think impressive museums and thriving theaters – Pittsburgh should be top of your vacation list.

Things to see

Start your trip in downtown Pittsburgh with a wander to Point State Park. At the tip of downtown where the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers meet to form the majestic Ohio River, this green jut of land peeks out below soaring glass-fronted high rises. Brimming with theaters showing movies, plays, touring Broadway musicals, opera, and live music performances, downtown’s nearby cultural district is a perfect spot for nighttime entertainment. If you’re a sports fan walk across one of the city’s scenic bridges to North Shore where you’ll find PNC Park, home to the Pittsburgh Pirates Major League Baseball team. Close by, Heinz Field’s the place to catch an iconic NFL Pittsburgh Steelers match. Just out of downtown, historic Oakland’s serene streets are lined with cafés, museums – including the world-class Carnegie Museum of Natural History – and colleges. A high-brow hotspot, the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh’s an iconic landmark.

Hotels in Pittsburgh

Welcoming Pittsburgh excels in the art of hospitality. From modern business-led 4-star hotels with function rooms and meeting facilities galore to gleaming glass-fronted atriums encasing chic design-led 4 and 5-star hotels sporting spa facilities, glamorous suites with river views, and top-notch service, you won’t find it hard to spoil yourself in Pittsburgh. Boutique hotels are all the rage too, providing high-end luxury on a smaller, arty scale. For those on a tighter budget, 2-star motels and discount hotels can be found on the city’s outskirts, or you could pick from an array of 3-star independent guesthouses in a residential neighborhood.

Where to stay

If you plan on spending your time taking trips to the theater, visiting museums, and eating in delectable bistros, downtown Pittsburgh’s the spot for you. Just across the sparkly Allegheny River, North Shore is a stroll from central downtown, and home to major sporting venues, glitzy Rivers Casino – if you fancy some high-rolling – and a selection of impressive museums, including pop art-filled Andy Warhol Museum. Oakland’s another favorite spot, brimming with college town atmosphere, coffee shops, and museums. Mount Washington’s a popular neighborhood spot thanks to its wide-reaching city views. You can take the Duquesne Incline to the top from near Station Square.

How to get to Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh International Airport’s a major entry point for visitors from all over the US. There are hordes of flights serving most major US cities. There are also direct flights to Europe and Canada. To get to Oakland or downtown, hop on the inexpensive Airport Flyer from outside the airport. Downtown Pittsburgh’s so small it’s really easy to walk around. If you do get tired legs you can always catch a bus or the light rail. Both of these provide free trips within downtown. With such good public transport, it’s really unnecessary to rent a vehicle, but you can do this from the city center or the airport if needed.
