Olympia is a fairly small state capital, but it manages to pack in a huge amount of arts, culture, history, and entertainment within the city limits. Here you'll find many of the state's government departments, with many buildings dating back to the 19th century, and there are lots of publicly owned parks and outdoor spaces, including hiking and biking trails not far from the city center. Things to see

Washington State Capitol stands proudly in the heart of Olympia, and can be recognized by the iconic dome of the Legislative Building. Around the well-kept grounds you'll find several buildings housing different government departments, and many elected officials such as the secretary of state have their chambers within these halls. Take a guided tour and you'll see grand stone staircases, intricate paintings and sculptures, and sparkly Tiffany chandeliers hanging from the tall ceilings, highlighting the importance of this landmark. On the grounds you'll also find the red-bricked Governor's Mansion, and if you manage to book one of the occasional tours you can enjoy seeing rare art works and artifacts from the early days of the USA, with ornate silver artifacts and marble statues that have been given as gifts to various governors over the years. For those traveling with family, the Hands On Children's Museum is an essential stop, with 2 levels of exhibitions designed to appeal to the under 10s. With bright, interactive displays they can learn about how things work, and can enjoy playing pretend or making their own works of art.
