The long white beaches were first visited by some of the earliest settlers of the USA, and today the landscape remains beautiful and unspoiled with soft green sand dunes and clear waters. The city was also a major strategic post during the Civil War, with slaves escaping to Virginia to seek their freedom, and many of the historic attractions are based around this important time.
