Leavenworth Hotels

Rediscover impressive feats of military might in historic museums, explore beautiful parks that are perfect for summer picnics, and step back in time to the days of malted milkshakes, 50s decor, and a friendly vibe. The delightful Kansas town of Leavenworth has something for everyone, from its crowded American bars and grills that are packed on weekend evenings, to the fast-flowing waters of the nearby Missouri River, where leisurely kayaking trips are only marginally more energetic than fishing for enormous blue catfish downstream.

Things to see

Beyond the imposing checkpoint that marks the entrance to Fort Leavenworth, the US Military’s oldest installation, are some unique cultural sites that are open to the public to visit. Tucked away in its expansive grounds, the Frontier Army Museum is a tribute to the US Army’s expansion in the west throughout the 1800s. Inside its austere walls you’ll find an impressive collection of armaments, replicas of original military vehicles, and information on the historic battles that took place. Before you leave the Fort, visit the Buffalo Soldier Memorial Park and the open ground of the National Cemetery, where the green grass is broken by row upon row of small, white headstones. If you’re getting to Leavenworth from the Kansas City International Airport, you’ll most likely pass through Leavenworth’s city center on South 4th Street. It’s a varied collection of red brick buildings shaded by green awnings, car dealerships fronted by packed parking lots, and the occasional modern office block tucked between cozy apartment buildings and laid-back diners.

If you’re determined to book somewhere with a few extra stars, stick closer to Kansas City International Airport where you’ll find an excellent choice. Many of the big hotel brands have a presence here, and as well as traditional hotels with elegant guestrooms there are some delightful residence-style hotels featuring private kitchenettes, swimming pools, and complimentary airport transfers.
