Visit modern art museums filled with colorful canvases, discover wild animals in the mountain zoo, and shop in glitzy malls filled with popular fashion stores and glittering jewelry displays. Tucked away near the mountains of Virginia, Roanoke is an exciting town with plenty of attractions. The bustling town center is a hive of activity with shoppers and business workers throughout the day. The historic city market is open every day of the week (except Christmas and New Year) and is filled with blue and white stalls piled high with juicy oranges, artisan breads, and other exciting local produce. On Market Street, quaint delis hug the sidewalk alongside trendy cafés and the vivid color of gardening stores.

Things to see

Throughout the year the Roanoke Civic Center boasts a notable line-up of events, from live music performances to annual exhibitions. It’s a large, contemporary building right at the heart of the city, making it easy to get to by public transport or car. A little further north along the fast-moving freeway, the Valley View Mall is a modern covered shopping center filled with big name brand stores, fashionable clothing shops, and a selection of popular department stores. Vast parking lots on every side of this popular mall mean you’ve got plenty of time to enjoy browsing before returning to your car. Over on Harrison Avenue, the Harrison Museum of African American Culture does a great job of showing off artifacts that have been preserved from early history. You can view photographs of early settlers, see memorabilia of their travels, and read stories of their lives as they were told many years ago. The museum itself is a piece of history, housed in a building that was once used as Harrison School.
