Throughout the year the Roanoke Civic Center boasts a notable line-up of events, from live music performances to annual exhibitions. It’s a large, contemporary building right at the heart of the city, making it easy to get to by public transport or car. A little further north along the fast-moving freeway, the Valley View Mall is a modern covered shopping center filled with big name brand stores, fashionable clothing shops, and a selection of popular department stores. Vast parking lots on every side of this popular mall mean you’ve got plenty of time to enjoy browsing before returning to your car. Over on Harrison Avenue, the Harrison Museum of African American Culture does a great job of showing off artifacts that have been preserved from early history. You can view photographs of early settlers, see memorabilia of their travels, and read stories of their lives as they were told many years ago. The museum itself is a piece of history, housed in a building that was once used as Harrison School.

There’s a good choice of upmarket as well as discount hotels along Campbell Avenue Southeast, which is also great for shopping and sightseeing. To the west, Salem is a small town that hugs the outskirts of Roanoke. It’s a pretty little place, and the bustling Main Street is lined with old-fashioned shops and colonial homes.

How to get to Roanoke

Outside the city boundaries, and within the dramatic green landscape of Jefferson National Park, New Castle International Airport is the closest entry point for travelers from abroad. There are alternative routes to fly, however, especially if you don’t mind taking connecting flights. The Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport flies to other international airports that include Washington, Detroit, Tampa, New York, and Chicago amongst others.
