Montauk Hotels

For a small and far-flung place, right at the easternmost tip of Long Island, Montauk has a lot to shout about. From the oldest lighthouse in the USA to its rapidly burgeoning status as the best surf destination on the East Coast, you could forgive it if it had capitalized on these claims to fame with touristy developments. But instead, Montauk keeps things gloriously simple – just crashing waves, unspoiled sandy coves, and huge state parks with miles of hiking trails.

Things to see

The Montauk Point Lighthouse, which dominates the town both visually and historically, is a good place to start. The lighthouse has been in operation for over 200 years, and still prevents boats from crashing into the rocks, but it also contains a museum, where its history can be explored. It makes for an iconic photo at sunset, when it is silhouetted against a watercolor sky. Enjoy one of Montauk’s beaches or bays – Gin Beach is perfect for families, with soft beaches and shallow water. The crashing breaks off Camp Hero, meanwhile, provide the perfect playground for experienced surfers, while beginners can learn in the kinder waters at Ditch Plains Beach. If you head inland, you’ll discover the Montauk Downs State Park, which as well as its many hiking trails, is also home to one of the best golf courses in the USA.

Hotels in Montauk

Montauk hotels are very much inspired by their location and the relaxed nature of life here. Even their names are mostly beach-related. Whether you choose a large, luxury resort or a budget hotel with self-catering facilities, you’re almost guaranteed sea views, or at the very least, a beach right on the doorstep. Most offer swimming pools and other leisure amenities, ranging from tennis courts to spas. Montauk’s discount hotels provide casual, rustic furnishings, with rooms or apartments available. WiFi access is usually free, as is parking. In the luxury hotels, you’ll find elegant 4-poster beds, flat-screen TVs, and onsite restaurants.

Where to stay

Montauk’s hotels are clustered along the shoreline to make the most of the wonderful sea views, so choosing one can be the hardest part. At the northeastern end, between Montauk Downs State Park and Ditch Plains Beach, you’ll find a selection of budget and mid-range hotels. It’s a good central location, within easy reach of most of the beaches and main attractions. A couple of the luxury hotels can be found on the other side of the small peninsula, close to Gin Beach. It’s a slightly more secluded setting, but you’ll be even closer to the windswept vistas of Montauk Point.
