Many tourists come to the city purely to watch speedway Indianapolis enjoys warm and dry summers, with average July and August temperatures reaching around 85°F. Winters tend to be cooler, and the city regularly experiences moderate snowfall.

When to go to Indianapolis

Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to Indianapolis each May to watch the Indy 500, and the city becomes incredibly crowded, so booking your hotel in Indianapolis well in advance is highly recommended if you are planning to visit this event. How to get to Indianapolis

The Indianapolis International Airport (IND) serves the city, and is situated just over a mile from the city center. Airport hotels include the Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Airport and the Hyatt Place, or you can find many hotels in downtown Indianapolis, making the short transfer from the airport by the IndyGo bus service, hotel shuttles, or taxi. Once you reach the city itself, Indianapolis travel options are fairly limited. Amtrak trains and Greyhound buses call at the city, and serve destinations further afield, including Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia, so staying at a hotel near Indianapolis and travelling into the city is another possible option.

Why visit Indianapolis

The leading attraction in Indianapolis is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway which hosts a full calendar or major racing events. Further race events are held at nearby Raceway Park. For those more interested in nature, why not visit Indianapolis Zoo, which houses a botanical garden as well as a large collection of animals. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis has displays on science and technology, dinosaurs, and a planetarium.
