Yuma Hotels

On the Colorado River in Arizona, baked by the sun and nestled amid a scorched and craggy desert landscape, it's no wonder Yuma has a mythic place in American lore. Referenced in classic Westerns like The Wild Bunch and For a Few Dollars More, it's still retained its rugged character despite the march of progress and modernity. This makes it a perfect place to explore if you like your city breaks to feature natural grandeur as well as urban adventure.

Things to see

The Yuma Territorial Prison is one of the iconic attractions of Yuma, and there's no better place to experience the city's Wild West heritage. Opened in 1875, its rough-hewn granite cells once housed train robbers and gunfighters, including an outlaw mixed up in the legendary feud between Wyatt Earp and the Clantons. As well as being able to see the cells, you can also get your own mugshot taken using original equipment from the time. A more serene spot is Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park. Once used by the army to store supplies, it's now a green sprawl that's perfect for picnics, although there are also original and restored buildings featuring exhibits from the frontier days. Just outside Yuma you'll find the sprawl of the hot wilderness, which seasoned hikers will relish taking on. Look out for wild horses and deer while you're out there. There are also plenty of picturesque sand dunes to go off-roading on. If you're after a very different kind of thrill, you can also try your hand at the games in the city's big casinos.

You won't find many grand or luxurious hotels in Yuma. This is a down-to-earth sort of place, and the accommodation is functional rather than sleek or spectacular. But the good thing is there is a huge variety to choose from, and they tend to offer some seriously good amenities. These range from indoor and outdoor swimming pools to saunas, spa tubs, and on-site fitness centers. Many of the hotels also offer WiFi access in guestrooms, public spaces, or both. All you have to do is choose the one that's best located for you.

Where to stay

There's a generous assortment of hotels in Yuma that are scattered throughout the city center. These centrally-located pads are perfect if you want easy access to the tourist attractions such as Yuma Territorial Prison, not to mention the many bars, restaurants, and shops that all city breakers will want to explore. There are also some hotels close to the local airport, and others that are situated right up alongside the border between California and Arizona. A good look around online will let you compare the facilities and prices and make a choice at your leisure.

How to get to Yuma

The city actually has its very own gateway, Yuma International Airport. It's located just minutes from the center by car. However, despite its name, you'll only get domestic civilian flights coming to and from Yuma. If you're arriving from overseas, you can land at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which happens to be Arizona's busiest airport. Another entry point is San Diego International Airport. Superb road connections mean it's a simple matter of hiring a car to get to Yuma itself.
