Algonquin Hotels

Head out from the thrilling furore of Chicago and you'll come to a tranquil oasis that feels like a world away from the Windy City despite being within driving distance. This is the village of Algonquin, often dubbed The Grem of the Fox River Valley. That's not to say it's a sleepy little place, though. While certainly more tranquil than the skyscraper-filled metropolis nearby, Algonquin has an energy of its own thanks to the sheer number of shops and restaurants here. In fact, it's one of the great retail hubs of the state.

Things to see

When visiting Algonquin you've got to make time to explore the Old Town District. Here you'll see charming old Victorian homes side by side, creating a cozy atmosphere that beckons you in. Walking the streets, you'll see independent boutiques, quaint churches, and more restaurants than you shake a fork at (including one which features its own boat you can dine in). On top of that, the area features a number of picturesque parks, including Riverfront Park and Cornish Park. A particular must-see, if you want a taste of the region's past, is Algonquin Historic Village Hall, which dates back to 1907. If you want to do some serious shopping, Algonquin is the place to be thanks to its many malls – including the open air retail center that is Crystal Court. On sunny days you can also sample the delicious, locally produced wares of the farmers' markets, while the landscape around the village, with its lakes and creeks, is ideal for hiking and cycling. If you really want to get the heart racing, you can also hit the slopes at Raging Buffalo Snowboard Ski Park.
