Kihei Hotels

Beneath bright blue skies as far as the eye can see, the town of Kihei sits on the inner curve of Maalaea Bay, enjoying widespread views across the crystal clear water to the rugged landscape on either side. It’s a tranquil destination that’s popular for its dry weather. Surf the gentle ocean swells on a boogie board, or walk through the landscaped grounds of its pretty botanical gardens. Enjoy local artworks in main street galleries, or head to the beach for evening bonfires and the vivacious music of a traditional luau.

Things to see

On any holiday to Hawaii, beaches are not something you’ll struggle to find, but Kihei has some stretches of sand that are definitely worth stumbling across. The Kamaole Beach Park 3 is a fantastic, out-of-the-way coastal landmark that’s favored by tourists as well as locals. Aside from the soft, warm sands and the startlingly blue sea, there’s a strip of grassy land and a playground for youngsters to enjoy. Spend an afternoon snorkeling the shallow waters and you might spot some colorful corals beneath the waves, before relaxing with a picnic on the sloping banks. The Elleair Maui Golf Club also enjoys spectacular views, although some of the holes on this course are challenging enough that you might not have time to appreciate your surroundings. It’s a different story over at the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge. You simply have to stop and enjoy your hike through this dramatic salt marsh landscape, spotting the different species of waterfowl as you navigate the purpose-built boardwalk next to the open ocean.

Where to stay

Kihei is a beach-lover’s dream destination, a small town on the southern side of Hawaii’s Maui Island where long, sunny days have bleached the sand to an almost pure white. The narrow lanes that jut towards the sea from South Kihei Road are lined with a mixture of family homes and discount hotels, while luxury Kihei hotels can be found closer to the Kihei Town Center. Everywhere you turn, lush parks are squeezed in-between homes and the beach, fringed by lofty palm trees and neon-lit tourist bars. American-style outdoor shopping malls boast everything from supermarkets and Italian restaurants, to fast-food joints and dive shops.

How to get to Kihei

Although the island of Maui has its own airport, it really only serves domestic travelers. Most international arrivals touch down in the larger Honolulu International Airport, found on the neighboring island of Oahu. From there, onward travel to Kihei is by internal flight, which takes around half an hour. You can go by ferry instead, but the journey is longer and less direct. Once you’re in Kihei, getting around is easy on foot. If you decide to enjoy some island scenery outside the town, tour companies or private taxis mean you still don’t need your own car.
