Wausau is a city for all seasons, and whether it's crunching through fall's fiery foliage, or smothering on sunscreen before kayaking across Wisconsin River's glass-smooth water, new experiences are waiting throughout the year. One thing's for sure, you'll always receive a warm welcome from the residents of this charming northern city, whenever you visit.

Things to see

Strap on your skis, or buckle on your snowboard, before trusting your instincts and launching into 1 of Granite Ski Area's daring downhill runs. It's probably sensible to give the resort's heart-stopping - 200-meter vertical drop - a wide berth, however. The winding ski runs glow bright white under the deep blue sky during the day, but night skiing gives you the unforgettable chance to glide down the resort's floodlit snakes of light, below a glowing ceiling of stars. The ski area sits less than 10 miles away from downtown, in the scenic Rib Mountain State Park – and the park is just as spectacular when its coat of snow has melted away. Peek your head above the trees, to view the landscape, by climbing the steps of the 60-feet-tall wooden observation deck. Once you've got your breath back, you'll be rewarded with beautiful, open views of the color-speckled forest scenery. Nerve-shredding thrills are also available all year round, thanks to the frothy white water rafting facilities waiting at the Whitewater Park in downtown Wausau. If lazily pushing your kayak through the gentle currents of the Wisconsin River sounds more appealing, then an all-day excursion will give you chance to drift slowly back to Wausau, racing the clear river's fish as you paddle.

Where to stay

The River District is a vibrant area of the city, and a stroll around its streets will always reveal something new to see or do. Pick up a slice of local apple-smoked cheese from the farmers' market, or attend 1 of the regular concerts in the square – during which local artists and bands shake the surroundings buildings with their music. Staying to the east of the city puts the Nine Mile Recreation Area within easy reach, and the park offers a great setting for cross-country skiing. Keep your eyes peeled, as there's a chance you'll spot the tree-like antlers of elk, and scampering feet of coyotes, as you slide across the snow.
