Huntington Beach Hotels

There's one major draw for visitors to Huntington Beach and that's the surf. This is a real surfers' paradise, and from the massive waves which draw those board-loving enthusiasts to the Surf Hall of Fame, the whole place is geared around celebrating that most hi-octane of watersports. It's not just about the waves, though, with plenty of restaurants and shops on hand, as well as a pier for leisurely strolls and of course the perfect sands of the beach itself.

Things to see

One of the most iconic elements of the region is the Huntington Beach Pier which is well over 500 metres long and is, aside from being a treat for the eye thanks to its long concrete design which stretches out into the water and is modelled on the original 1914 version, a popular hang-out spot for the surfers who come here in their thousands. It's a great place to watch the waves, and the riders on them, as well as to grab a snack. Huntington State Beach itself is a place to kick back and relax on the sugar-white sands, surf, fish, or gather round a bonfire, but it's also – perhaps more surprisingly – home to a number of rare birds including the California least tern. For a change of scenery, Huntington Central Park is a huge, 350 acre park where you can picnic, camp, or just wander around the paved paths and play a spot of Frisbee.

Where to stay

If you choose to stay in Huntington Beach you'll soon discover that surfing doesn't just dominate the appeal of the place, its laid-back attitude can be felt throughout the area, from the friendly service to the leisurely pace of life as you stroll from pier-front to Main Street and its many quirky and inviting shops. If you are a surf fan, you'll find plenty of surf apparel stores to choose from, but when you stroll along Main Street and hear the musicians performing or while away an hour in a café you'll feel right at home even if you never take to the waves.
