New Mexico has a long relationship with America’s military weapons development program, and the southern city of Alamogordo is one of the most significant sites in the country with regards to this agenda. White Sands Missile Range is here, as is Holloman Air Force Base and the Trinity Site where the world’s first atomic bomb was detonated. The New Mexico Museum of Space History puts all this history into clear perspective and is balanced by more peaceful attractions like the Toy Train Depot and the beautiful mountain town of Cloudcroft.
Hotels in Alamogordo
Alamogordo is both a popular tourist destination and a busy town for business and government travelers. The accommodations in this city cater to both groups of visitors, with all of America’s best-known chain motels on site. Some of the lodging is geared towards long-stay visitors like the Fairfield Inn and Suites, while others focus on budget rates and minimal facilities.
The most luxurious rooms tend to be found on the outskirts of Alamogordo, where the hotels have more space to spread out. Even the most affordable motels like the Days Inn have outdoor swimming pools which are open in summer and complimentary breakfast for guests.
Where to stay
There are many options for a chain motel like the Quality Inn and Suites or an independent bed and breakfast within the downtown district of Alamogordo. This is where most of the city’s amenities are located along with the museums and parks.
Venture into the outskirts of Alamogordo and the accommodation begins to lean in a more upscale direction. There is some nice long-stay lodging here, such as the Suburban Extended Stay Hotel which offers spacious rooms and kitchen-style amenities.
A change of scenery is easy to manage around Alamogordo thanks to the mountains on the edge of the city. A 30-minute drive will get you to the cool climes of Cloudcroft, where hotels like the Lodge at Cloudcroft offer gorgeous accommodations.
